To rationalize the Lynx Manufacturing approach to prioritization is to point out the one good thing I noticed within the case study was that directorates, at minimum, had a project inventory. Each of the directorates knew which projects they wanted to complete for the year, and while they poached individuals from other teams to “put out fires” they were aware of what capabilities and resources other teams had even if they were ignorant of what other directorates projects were (Kerzner, 2022, p. 363). In general, the
organization suffered in project prioritization and failed to remove silos. Senior management should have stepped in much sooner in an effort to not only easy directorates relationships but also ensure the company was moving forward towards success.
In an effort to set the directorates and the organization up for success, senior
management should have provided the directorates with a copy of the company’s strategy for the year and mission goals. Along with the organization’s strategy and a centralized project inventory, directorates could discuss and determine which projects provide the best return on investment and net present value while also being in strategic alignment with the organizations goals (Windsor, 2021). After determining, the top projects and seeing if any projects overlapped, the directorates could begin to prioritize, perhaps with a weighted scale or another method they deemed suitable (Windsor, 2021).
If the directorates continue to be at odds with each other, one solution would
be to create a portfolio governance committee to make the informed decisions for project prioritization (Kerzner, 2022). These governance committees would rely on directorates to provide valid business cases but would be able to make decisions based off of which projects bring value rather than which projects are nearest and dearest to a specific directorate. Utilizing a governance committee and creating a formal process to collect projects, prioritize, assess resources and risks and to then decide which projects can be funded would save the organization not just stress, but also wasted resources and money.
