After reading this article, I identified the shortcoming in Citibank's planning. Citibank relied on third-party physical transportation providers to move critical unencrypted information tapes from one data center to another. Unfortunately, this was their main way of moving their data until they switched to the electronic movement of encrypted digital data. Nonetheless, the incident occurred before the change in transportation could be implemented. The physical movement of unencrypted tapes only increased the risk and potential for this incident to materialize. The part of the contingency planning process that came up short is the IR or incident
response. This shortcoming could have been prevented if they had done a thorough evaluation of the significant risks that the physical transportation of these valuable tapes represented. Furthermore, a complete step-by-step breakdown and analysis of the delivery of physical tapes from one data center to another should have been done to identify any possibility of an incident occurring. In conclusion, the use of electronic encrypted data delivery should have been implemented as the best option for this data transportation and would have prevented such an incident.
