Ted Tenhagen IT-505- X1633 5-2 Final Project Milestone Two: Networking and Database Reports October 21, 2023
Computer Networking is referring to the linking of computers using hardware and software to establish communication between computers. Network configuration is assigning settings, controls, flows of information, and policies for the network. The provided diagram for the scenario is of an Ethernet LAN configuration. LAN is an abbreviation for Local Area Networks, which, means that there is a smaller physical distance between the computers in the network. In the diagram the department computers are indicated to be physically connected to the router and server by means of ethernet cables. The components of this network are the router, the server, the ethernet cables and the users which are indicated by the department computers. The router connects the computers to the internet and without it, the internet would be unable to be accessed (Smith). The server in the diagram is labeled department server and seems to indicate that it is a file server. A file server is where there is storage and management of data files and having this in a network allows any of the computers in the network to be able to access the files (Smith). Ethernet cables are categorized as physical transmission media (Google Sites) and that means the ethernet cables are the means of which the data is being transmitted between the computers in the network (Smith). Two components that seem to be missing from the diagram is a modem and switch. A modem is a device that is used with communication between the network and the internet itself (Smith). It differs from the router since the router is what creates the network between the computers themselves and modem is between the computers as a whole and the internet. A modem is critical to connect all the computers in the network to the internet. A switch is to create more Ethernet ports to the network, monitoring traffic on individual ports or setting up virtual networks (Cunningham). They are important to the network to improve network speed or reduce wireless interference (Cunningham). Database Report In the database there are four tables, Computer Information, Employee Information, Job Titles, and Upgrade Information. In the first table, Computer Information, there is information on the computers in the network. The computer ID that goes from one to twenty, and in the next column over there is the location of where the computer is in the layout. The next column is the coinciding Employee ID to indicate which employee is assigned to use that specific computer, and the last column is whether the specific computer has the Advanced Software Packet. The second table is labeled Employee Information and has 6 columns of information. The first column is Employee ID, the second and third columns are last and first names of the employees. The fourth column is the respective job title, the fifth and sixth columns are phone numbers to contact the coinciding employee, with the fifth column being the office extension number and sixth being the mobile number. The third table consists of one column that lists the job titles that are being affected by the operating system. The fourth table is the Upgrade Information which contains five columns of information. The first one is to indicate the specific computer with computer ID, the second states which version of the operating system is on the computer currently. The third column is
version of the operating system the computer will have after the upgrade. The fourth column is designating which computer is in which upgrade group. And the final column is the date of when the specific computer will receive the upgrade. To insert the upgrade dates into the table, it was necessary to change the data type of the Upgrade column from text to date/time. To do so, a new column was added and then the data type was set to date/time. Then selected the date by clicking the small calendar icon in the corner of the field box and then selected the correct date that was previously set for the corresponding group. And then repeated the process until the column was filled with the correct data. The query is a smaller set of the data that has been collected from the other tables. In design view in the employee information and the computer information have the same repeating data with the employee ID. And the same can be said between the computer information and upgrade information with computer ID. The query in this scenario contains the information of the employees’ first and last names, their job titles, the location of their workstation, which upgrade group they are in and when the upgrade is scheduled to happen for their computers. The reason that this data is pulled is most likely since the groups seem to be divided by who needs the upgrade the most can the necessary information to upgrade the workstations.
