Now that we know what an open-source is, we were asked to look into an example for this journal entry, called “Linux”. Linux is a very popular operating system containing a multitude of open sources. Linux was founded by Linus Torvalds who at the time was a second-year computer science student in Finland. Linus was using Minux at the time, which was a version of the Unix software. Minux was free to use which is why he was using it, but he learned that this software did not meet his needs and that he wanted to create his own operating system that would be uniquely tailored to his needs but able to be modified to fit others' needs as well. Linux was launched in August 1991 (Linux’s brilliant career). Unlike some Windows platforms, in which there is only one version of the system, there is no single version of Linux. Different assortments of Linux are made when the Linux kernel is combined with other software, and they come together to form one single operating system (Linux a beginner's guide). There is a myriad of different combinations that are possible to create a Linux version that works for you. One Linux open source is called “Ubuntu” and Ubuntu tries to run a smoother version of some of the other Linux combinations. A lot of people believe that open sources where anyone can modify the code, including people that don’t know the first thing about codes (like myself), make the software less secure. However, contradictory to popular belief, Linux is a very secure open-source program, because of the fact that it is available to users to look at and repair possible mistakes and users can constantly make it better (computerhope.com). Some people might ask, why would a chef give away their super famous secret recipe? Well, the original chef will still get the credit for the recipe, since they made it, but this allows that recipe to be enjoyed all over the world. It also allows people to modify the recipe however they like so that they can make a dish they will enjoy, whether that means adding more salt or more spice. This is the same concept with open source and why creators would allow people to use the software for free. Businesses can do so much with Linux since it is accessible and available to the public and the cost was incurred by the creator of the code, so it has already been paid for. These businesses can go into the source code and make changes to it with the ability to stay within a budget and fit the code to their specific business. Another previously mentioned advantage for businesses is the security of the software and especially when comparing Linux to Windows. Windows has a huge user base and with many being beginner computer users, Windows is an easy target for malware and viruses sent by malevolent coders. I am a big Mac OS lover, but my boyfriend has used Linux since he has an Android, and he loves it.
