Dear Dr. Lee:
In 2015, Facebook gave University of Cambridge psychology professor, Aleksandr Kogan, permission to gather information from Facebook users who completed a “personality quiz” on a third-party app called “Thisisyourdigitallife”. The professor claimed this information was being used for academic purposes but in actuality, the data
was sold to Cambridge Analytica Technologies. The personal information of millions of individual Facebook users had been collected and used in ways they were not made aware of nor consented to. Since, GDPR (
General
Data Protection Regulation),
requires companies to disclose and explain to users, any user information being shared with third parties and the user's full consent. Tuttle, H. (2018). Facebook Scandals raises data privacy concerns.
I believe Facebook was deceived by the University of Cambridge and its intentions to use the user data it collected from Facebook users. Facebook is a multi-billion dollar company and has taken many security measures to prevent future data privacy breaches from occurring. With the new security regulations Facebook has implemented,
I feel they would be a safe business to partner with.
I would like to propose that Gauze + Effect partner with Facebook. Facebook has a nationwide platform that we could utilize to advertise not only to future clients but also, to future investors to
grow and expand our company. We are a small business with limited means to advertise our business and we need a partnering business to help spread the word of what we are about and how we can grow to help more clients in need. We could limit access and information to Facebook if made a partner. This would help assure potential and existing clients and investors that we are serious about protecting our client's privacy and acknowledging the potential risk of partnering with a business with a past ethical dilemma by limiting what we share (data-wise) with them.
We could also ensure our security systems are up to date with the highest and most advanced security standards. This would also ensure our potential and existing clients and investors that we are taking every measure we can to ensure our client's privacy will stay protected. This would cost the company money to implement but by partnering with Facebook, and advertising our business on a much larger scale, we will also bring in more money.
I feel that being honest and acknowledging Facebook's past ethical dilemma and not just sweeping it under the rug, is important. I believe that we should make an announcement to the public that we are partnering with Facebook but we also acknowledge that they were involved in
questionable ethics in the past. However, we’ve taken strides to ensure that Facebook will have limited access to client data and that we’ve implemented up-to-date security measures to ensure that our client's data will be kept private and secure. If we are honest and communicate
our plan of action to ensure our stakeholders that we will work very hard and take this very seriously, we will have a stronger, reliable, and honest reputation. I believe in being honest and open about my past and transgressions. I don’t believe in hiding them but communicating that yes, I have fallen but I got back up and learned from my mistakes and paved the way for me to prevent making the same mistakes twice. We are all human, humans make mistakes. I believe in second chances and that it is never too late to start over and be the very best that you can possibly be. I believe that Facebook also deserves a second chance. They have made continued efforts to ensure their client’s privacy continues to be guarded and for future ethical dilemmas to be a thing of the past. They want to rebuild the public trust and their security features and adhering to
the government user privacy data regulations a priority. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
