Elements of a Project Charter
Project charter elements are essential for project planning and execution. They state the project's purpose and justification, define tangible outcomes, and define its boundaries and influences. These elements in the project charter help stakeholders understand the project's direction, objectives, and constraints, ensuring that the project is executed effectively (Farag, 2021; Gaudet & Collins, 2022).
Project Goal
Project goals are the project's purpose and desired outcome. Defining the project's purpose and answering the "why" question is crucial (Farag, 2021). The goal of a capstone project may be to address a business need, opportunity, or problem. For clear project direction and evaluation metrics, SMART goals are essential (Gaudet & Collins, 2022).
Deliverables and Research Goals
Presenting deliverables and research goals gives a high-level project plan. Action words help everyone grasp deliverables (Gaudet & Collins, 2022). Breaking deliverables into stages like inquiry, action, and presentation helps organize project workflow in a project charter. Outlining study objectives, data sources, techniques, and measurements enables a methodical approach to data collection to meet project goals.
Scope, Assumptions, Constraints & Dependencies
Farag (2021) states that the project scope determines a project's output and expenditure. It
defines scope, meeting project goals, and excludes responsibilities outside project boundaries. A clear scope prevents scope creep and ensures a focused and attainable project accomplishments (Farag, 2021). Equally important is identifying assumptions, constraints, and 2

dependencies. Assumptions constitute project requirements, whereas constraints are factors confining project management. Understanding project dependencies helps plan and manage risk.
Unique Project Charter Resource
The NIMS Sample Project Charter is a complete healthcare incident reporting system deployment template. The HSE NIMS Team excels at detailing background information, business case, objectives, stakeholders, outputs, and more (HSE NIMS Team, 2023). Clarity, conciseness, and real-world project management approaches make this a helpful resource. It covers key areas, promotes stakeholder knowledge, and provides a realistic model for students and professionals starting comparable initiatives. This industry-specific project charter example clarifies each section. Confidentiality agreements and project permission stress ethics and project
start-up.
