In 1969, the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA) was created by a
group of individuals who felt the field of auditing could be enhanced through a centralized
source of information and guidance in the computer system (ISACA, 2010).
The reason was due
to the need of compliance. The organization has almost 100,000 members worldwide.
ISACA provides practical guidance, benchmarks and other effective tools for all enterprises
that use information systems (ISACA, 2010). This is done through its members around the
world. ISACA’s purpose is to enhance its members with information system expertise in various
industry fields. Members benefit from one another by learning about the diverse views and topics
expressed throughout the organization. These benefits are possible through ISACA’s certification
programs. Members can earn the Certified Information Systems Auditor
(CISA), the Certified
Information Security Manager (CISM), the Certified in the Governance of Enterprise IT
(CGEIT), or Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC) certifications, which
are recognized globally and have been earned by more than 70,000 professionals since its
inception (ISACA, 2010).
Certifications are obtained through combinations of work and educational experiences, along
with an exam.
ISACA offer a number of online courses, on-site courses, and other educational
opportunities to help prepare for exams and earn credits towards certain certifications.
They also
promote research that results in the development of products useful to information technology
(IT) control, governance, security and assurance professionals (ISACA, 2010). Once
certifications are obtained, ISACA recommends that outside organizations recruit and retain
these individuals who have earned advanced information system (IS) knowledge and who can
contribute to the organization through resources that ISACA provides.

Members of ISACA benefit by having the relevant tools to promote innovation, growth, and
trust with (IT) professionals around the world.
According to ISACA, (2010), “Our belief in the
strength of our industry experts helps drive personal and organizational success, which is the
core of our members, volunteers and committees”. Members of ISACA not only gain (IS)
knowledge, they benefit from added value, recognition, and credibility.
