A data warehouse is a data storage system that holds historical and current information for a company (SAP, n.d.) A data warehouse compiles multiple databases, and uses a database server to retrieve the information. In addition to data retrieval, the data warehouse can be used to obtain analytics as well (SAP, n.d.).
A corporate information factory compiles information from multiple sources into a single
repository (Huges, 2016). It is beneficial to use a corporate information factory when you plan to
add information often.
Dimensional data warehouses are enterprise level warehouses that are comprised of multiple different sources (Kunjan et al., 2015) It is best to use dimensional data warehouses when fast data retrieval is important. Hospitals typically use a multi-dimensional data warehouse as they need to access patient records, health and insurance information, as well as any other information needed to provide care.
Standalone data marts are repositories made off of previously acquired information (IBM,
n.d.). It would not be suitable for enterprise level storage. Standalone data marts would
be beneficial to use within one business unit and when you do not plan to share information outside of your business.
