Journal Questions 1) How concerned are you about companies like Meta and Google collecting information about what you like, where you go, and what you buy? Why or why not? It is indeed an irrefutable fact that an individual’s personal data and information is never kept confidential while using internet. Search engines like Meta and Google sell one’s personal information to third parties for the purpose of getting advertisements and generating revenues through it. For this reason, I am genuinely concerned about these companies collecting the information about my favorite items, my personal possessions, and my newly bought antique pieces. I personally consider this act a fraudulent practice and a treacherous behavior (Matsakis, 2019) to keep a close eye on others’ personal things. As a collector of antique jewels, stamps, and coins, I often buy them online and never want anyone to know about them at any cost. These precious items are very valuable to me and I prefer to sell them on auctions after delivering informative lectures on their worth. However, Meta and Google gather the information about my articles due to which I often get useless calls by non-serious people eager to buy them at cheap rates. Therefore, I simply dislike this trend of Meta and Google and have raised voices on several platforms to ban these search engines from knowing about our daily lives and personal choices. 2) Do you read the terms and conditions which are presented for you to ‘agree with’ or ‘consent to’ when you are opening a new social media account? It is a widely accepted fact that terms and conditions are the legal agreements to save one’s social media accounts and the usage of a particular site; including, preventing abuses, creating creative content, and limiting the legal liabilities. For these reasons, a checkbox of terms and
conditions is always there to get ticked by the internet user before creating a new social media account. Despite its importance, I do not bother to read the terms and conditions before opening a new social media account because I know that they are about the ways of using this account and maintaining it. In each social media account like Facebook, Skype, Instagram, and Twitter, terms and conditions are more or less the same concerning the legal issues, the privacy, and the blocking of one’s account in case of misuse (Hennel, 2021). Being a continuous user and a great fan of different social media accounts, I prefer to use them often without reading about their terms of usage. Moreover, I only use my social media accounts for posting my pictures and sharing personal videos. Therefore, I think that reading terms and conditions is not essential in my case because I do not have official social media accounts for business or international purposes.
