5-3 Project Two Milestone: Presentation Planning Shawna Welch Professor Arvay CYB-400—Security Assessment & Auditing Southern New Hampshire University April 6, 2024
Presentation Planning I am developing a presentation for the board of developers of my company, Grey Matter, on the security aspects of the recent acquisition of a competitor company, BrainMeld. My task is to turn my previous analysis into a presentation for this audience as well as develop a supporting visual aid to brief the board on what steps are needed to remediate the vulnerabilities found by the OpenVAS report and what steps need to be taken to address the issues found. When developing the presentation, the approach is very important, as we will be presenting to the board of directors, basically the team of decision makers for the company. The presentation needs to be quick, precise, and to the point. The last thing we want to do is make the board feel like we are wasting their time, as their time is extremely valuable, and we should show them our gratitude for this opportunity to present to them. We also need to keep them engaged in the information that we are trying to share and present it to them in a language that they can understand, so to speak. We need to keep in mind that we are presenting technical information and facts from a security assessment to a less-technical audience who does not have the same technical background or skills as my team and me. Therefore, it is important to utilize strategies to communicate such technical findings to a less-technical audience. For example, instead of referring to the vulnerability by the technical term of SMB Brute Force Logins with Default Credentials, we can explain that multiple usernames and logins such as operator: guest are accessible, and a security risk for the company. It is also important to make sure that the board is aware of and understand what kind of security risk is related to each vulnerability, and if necessary, express what the possible impact may be to the company if the issue is not quickly addressed and remediated.
Visual Aid Brainstorming To present the information to the board of directors I think the most effective visual aid would be a PowerPoint presentation. The information that I would like to turn into a visual aid is to generate some type of graph or pie chart, to visually show how much of the vulnerabilities found in the OpenVAS report can be considered in each of the three categories, along with the severity and reasonable time frame of resolution associated with each. Each slide would present one point and be brief with limited information presented on each. The last thing I want from this visual aid is for it to be distracting, I don’t need the board trying to read my slides while also trying to listen to the information that I am verbally providing them with. The PowerPoint presentation will start with a title slide including the Grey Matter logo, an introduction slide, followed by the bulk of the presentation with the content slides and finished off with a conclusion slide wrapping up the presentation. The theme and color scheme of the presentation will be subtle, as I don’t want it to be so overpowering that it is a distraction or viewed as unprofessional. The PowerPoint presentation, my visual aid, will help me to get my message across to my audience by visually presenting facts that would otherwise be difficult to express verbally. Some people are better listeners, while others take things in better when they see them visually. A message as important as security risks to the company, and potential impacts if the vulnerabilities aren’t remediated is something that I want to make a lasting impression on the board of directors. I want to use every asset available to catch the board’s attention with this presentation.
