HRM 200 Case Study #2 – Fall 2023 Due: Tuesday, December 5 th , 2023, at 5:00pm You are the HR Leader at a manufacturing company. The company’s manufacturing plants include a unionized workforce, with operations on 7 days per week. At your weekly meeting with the Senior Management Team, one of the Plant Managers, Andrea, made an off-hand comment as the meeting was ending, stating that the plant may not meet its weekly production targets due to some sudden vacancies on the production line. You were not aware of any new vacancies at this plant. You contact Andrea to understand the situation, and you learned the following: - An employee, Michael, stopped working yesterday, stating that the machinery and equipment are dangerous, and that there is no way to perform his duties safely. Andrea stated that no one has ever complained before, so she does not think the concerns are valid, and that she thinks the equipment is perfectly safe. o Additionally, after pausing from working on the production line yesterday afternoon, Michael returned to work, but is working slower than usual; Andrea intends to issue a formal warning in order to motivate Michael to increase his pace. o Other employees have also commented on their concerns about safety, but they have continued to work. - Upon further investigation, you learn that the reason for Michael’s concerns is due to the fact that another employee, Rei, was injured earlier in the day yesterday. This is the first you have heard of the injury, and it was not otherwise reported. Andrea has sent Rei home without pay until she has recovered. - Because of these vacancies, Andrea is planning to increase the hourly rate of pay for the job postings, hoping that a higher rate of pay will entice more applicants, so that the job vacancies can be filled faster, and production targets can be achieved. She is also considering scheduling staff to work additional hours, by requiring weekday workers to work on the weekend. Questions: 1) What are three errors that the plant manager, Andrea, has made in this situation? For each error, cite the textbook and/or lecture content to describe and define the issue. Describe the risk to the organization associated with each issue. (6 marks, less than 1 page) 2) Given what you learned about Andrea’s handling of the situation, what three immediate actions would you take to address the situation? Be specific in describing the actions you would take. (3 marks, less than half a page) 3) Instead of the tactics that Andrea took, what are three better tactics that could have been taken by leadership to address these issues proactively and strategically? Describe why these actions are superior to the actions that Andrea took. (6 marks, less than 1 page)
