Medical Coding II Unit 2 Assignment
The American Health Information Management Association or AHIMA, has
standards of ethical coding, which each coder is responsible for following at all times,
it's a guideline for how coders should conduct themselves. Two standards that I find
important are one, number eight on the list for the AHIMA which is, “Maintain the
confidentiality of protected health information in accordance with the Code of Ethics.”.
This standard is defining the importance of HIPAA compliance and how a patient's
confidentiality should always be respected and a coder's job to comply with that. It
highlights the necessary practices in which a coder should follow when handling patient
health information to always comply with HIPAA and prevent misuse of data, fraud,
abuse, and ethical issues. As a professional coder it is your obligation to know and
follow all coding guidelines to make sure you are accurate, ethical, and compliant. This
standard impacts a coder's job and behavior by making sure they are professional at all
times and refrain from sharing any patient information when it is not needed, as as
coder you will read personal information on many people and to comply to this standard
a coder should never share what they know outside of work or gossip about it to other
coworkers. Let's say you work in a doctors office and as you are coding the physicians
notes for the day you run into a name you know, maybe an old friend from high school,
it would be against the standard of coding ethics to share any information that you read
on this person with anyone. Meaning even though you are out a few days later
caughting up with some other high school friends you have the responsibility to keep

that information to yourself, not to share it with others for gossip. To comply with
standard eight you have to respect the patient's privacy at all times, not just at work.
Another stand set by the American Health Information Management Associates,
is standard two, “Gather and report all data required for internal and external reporting,
in accordance with applicable requirements and data set definitions.”. This standard
stresses the importance of abstracting the most accurate and specific code at all times
when coding, and to follow guidelines put in place to make sure your codes are
accurate. This is so important as coding in your job, a coder should always make sure
they are abstracting the most accurate and specific codes when reporting. This means
coders should stay up to date on rules and guidelines, as well as make sure to read any
and all information before reporting.
