Homework 8
Question 1:
A furniture company would like to develop a layout for 96 x 92 facility. The company consists of 10 production departments, which are listed below with specified dimensions. After the investigation stage, the information you obtained is summarized in the following relationship table. For closeness ratings (CR), A=64, E=32, I=16, O=8, and U=0. GS

a)
(30 points) Apply the ALDEP heuristic to develop a solution. Assume the threshold closeness rating is O
and start by placing Office (OF) department. Explicitly write down each step and the placement order
. Draw the solution layout and compute ALDEP layout score with sweep width 40.

b)
(30 points) Apply the CORELAP heuristic to develop a solution. Use highest TCR
tie breaking rule. If tie exists after using highest TCR tie breaker, use largest area rule again. Explicitly write down each step and the placement order
. (You do not need to draw the solution layout.)
c)
(10 points) Which heuristic would you use to develop a layout for the furniture company? Give at least one reason for why it is better. I would use ALDEP heuristic because it gives us solutions which fit in the dimensions of the facility, but CORELAP gives us solutions that don’t fit into the layout
Consider the following flow matrix F and cost matrix C for d)-e). The cost matrix C indicates cost per unit flow between two departments.
F= C=
d)
(15 points) Compute CRAFT score for your ALDEP solution from part a. You should take cost into account and use rectilinear distances. 0

e)
(15 points) Compute the change in CRAFT score for swapping Framing department and General storage department and determine if the interchange improves the layout.
29750 – 28070 = 1680
No, the value became higher in a min problem, the layout was not improved.
