2 Applicability of a Data Flow Diagram The diagrammatic visualization of how inputs are integrated into a system and processed to generate outputs can be an essential tool for analyzing system efficiency, understanding company processes and evaluating performance (Jilani et al., 2008). Companies that utilize computer operations might also need to educate employees interacting with the computer applications on the entire workflow. Additionally, system reviews are essential for detecting errors, identifying areas for improvement and approximating the operation cost. Therefore, a data flow diagram is most useful when planning a company’s operations, implementing a new process, evaluating a process for work efficiency, or initiating new updates. Images make the illustration of a process more straightforward and effective than the use of words (BA-EXPERTS, 2016). The simplicity of a data flow diagram can make it easy for the system designers to communicate with the software engineers. Detecting missing steps that might impede the storage and processing of information can be much easier when looking at a graphical mapping than text descriptions (Jilani et al., 2008). Therefore, a data flow diagram can raise inquiries that can prompt updates that would lead to better planning and implementation of new systems. Companies might find this vital for calculating the cost of installing new technologies, employing data managers and system operators and training staff and customers. Moreover, the data flow diagram provides the framework for comparing the operations of an existing system with a new system. The organization can then engage with technology experts to redesign a more robust and resilient work process. These evaluations and comparisons help prevent unnecessary workflow problems and difficulties that might arise when installing or updating a new operation.
