This project is open-book, open-notes, and requires a computer.
You are to work in groups of 5 people
per group.
Please refer to the syllabus to determine when this mini-project is due.

Quality in manufacturing is defined as a measure of excellence or a state of being free of defects,
defective product and processes that conform to measurable and verifiable standards and achieve
specific customer or user requirements. Quality practitioners organize, manage, measure, calculate,
observe, and constantly try to improve processes to achieve this. They use many different tools to
achieve this, and in this project, you will use the tools of quality to characterize a process.
1)
Identify any transaction-related or production process (on or off campus) that you use often and
with which you have experienced issues, mistakes, problems, defects, etc. and characterize the
problems you have experienced. For example, you could examine a process at work, your morning
routine, or ordering a meal using a service like DoorDash, Grubhub or UberEats.
a.
[20 points] Describe the process using a process flow chart or process map.
b.
[30 points] Collect data on the problems, issues, or defects you have experienced (and
include the raw data as part of your submission).
c.
[30 points] Once you have collected your data, use appropriate methods to analyze the data
and describe for me what observations or conclusions you can draw from it (Cause and
Effect, Check Sheet, Histograms, Pareto, Why-Why, and Scatter Diagrams, etc.) This analysis
may require several iterations of a given tool (pareto diagram, why-why) to discover
problems inherent in the system.
d.
[20 points] Identify the greatest opportunity for improvement and brainstorm with your
team a plan (or potential ways) to correct/address the issue(s).
