Critical Thinking
1. You are the person in your office assigned the responsibility of replenishing and
maintaining the processing solutions. What tasks will you have to perform, and
how often will you need to do them?
One of the most crucial stages in dental diagnosis is film processing. The accuracy of the
thermometer and timer for manual processing needs to be verified every day. Every day, the
levels of the developer, fixer, and water bath solutions should be monitored. The water
circulation system needs to be inspected for automatic processing, and daily solution
replenishment and replacement should occur every three to four weeks.
2. You are using a stepwedge film to evaluate the quality of the developer solution.
You note that the middle density on the daily film is much lighter than the middle
density on the stepwedge film. What is the problem, and how do you solve it?
Should the center density of the daily film seem lighter than that of the stepwedge film, this
could indicate that there is a potential problem with the consistency or strength of the developer
solution. The following are some possible issues and fixes: Developer solution strength,
temperature Variations, processing time, developer contamination, improper handling of films,
quality control checks.
3. Mrs. Johnstone, a patient in your office, stops by one morning and asks to pick
up her radiographs because she is moving to another city. Kathy, the receptionist,
explains to Mrs. Johnstone that her films need to be duplicated, which will take
some time. Mrs. Johnstone becomes angry and wants her films immediately,
saying, “Those films belong to me. I paid for them, and I want them.” What should
Kathy tell Mrs. Johnstone?
I would start by trying to calm down the patient. I would kindly attempt to explain to her that
they must first be duplicated, which might require some time. I would kindly inform her that I
will call her as soon as I have the duplicates and that I will make every effort to have them
duplicated.
