Operations and supply chain management(OSCM) is defined as the design, operation and
improvement of the systems in place that create and deliver the firms products or services
(Jacobs & Chase, 2014). OSCM involves specialists in product design, purchasing,
manufacturing, service operations, logistics and distributions (Jacobs & Chase, 2014). “ Success
involves clever integration of great operations-related strategy, process that delivers the product
or service, and analytics to support the ongoing decisions needed to manage a firm.” (Jacobs &
Chase, p. 3, 2014). The major disciplines are:
-
Planning: process needed to operate an existing supply chain strategically
-
Sourcing: Selecting suppliers that will deliver goods and services needed to create a
product.
-
Making: Major products are produced, and service is provided. This involves scheduling
workers, coordinating materials and resources.
-
Delivering: Logistics process that involves the scheduled movement of products to
warehouses or customers
-
Returning: Process of receiving warn out, defective and excess products back from the
customer. (Jacobs & Chase, 2014)
Some of the segments listed above are something that I am pretty familiar with in my current
job. I am a student services coordinator for a small accelerated nursing program. I make sure
that students are all set admissions wise before they start the program and I am also there to
help them throughout the rest of program with whatever they need. One of the main aspects of
my job is planning and coordinator events. I take care of everything from start to finish for their
admissions exams, new student orientation, job fairs, and graduation. For example, for new
student orientation we do it right at the school, and since the average number of students that
start per semester is around 50 students, I am able to handle everything myself. I make sure
that the room is set up with tables, chairs, decorations, coffee, water, catering is all set and I
make sure that the agenda for the day is set and organized for the event, as well as reach out to
current students to be a part of a student panel for questions. Pretty much everything that goes
into planning an orientation falls on me and is my responsibility. I Love my job, and I love
planning and organizing these events for students, and it’s really cool to apart of the students
journey from the very start at their admission exams all the way to their graduation.
