Name: Sachin Dasu
Section 1: Activity Analysis (30 points)
Read the article entitled “Activity Analysis for Direct-Work Rate Improvement in Construction” and answer the following questions. Read the article from the beginning and stop at the end of the “Continuous Improvement” section or just before the “Validation of Activity Analysis” (Read pages 1117 to 1121). 1) According to the article, what is the generally understood definition of productivity in construction? The generally understood definition of productivity in construction is the relationship between inputs and outputs. 2) Cite the two primary purposes for measuring productivity: The two primary purposes for measuring productivity are to control project cost and schedule, and to obtain data for planning future projects. 3) Name two types of workface assessment techniques. The types of workforce assessment techniques are foreman-delay surveys and craftsman questionnaires. 4) What are the two parts of the Activity Analysis? The two parts of the activity analysis are workforce assessment and the continuous improvement process.
5) What are the five major steps to the Activity Analysis? The five major steps to the activity analysis are plan study, sample, analyze, plan and implement improvements.
6) What are three decision criteria elements for the “Plan Study” step? The three decision criteria elements for the “Plan Study” step are defining the sample population, defining the activity categories, and selecting sampling routes.
7) How is “direct work” defined in the article? Direct work is defined in the article as the act of exerting physical effort directed towards an activity or physically assisting in these activities. 8) Give three examples of “preparatory work”. Three examples of preparatory work are stretching activities, safety talks, and start card processes.
9) What is the typical confidence level used by most industrial sectors for work sampling? The typical confidence level used by most industrial sectors for work sampling is 95%.

10) What is the typical representation of hourly activity rates in construction work sampling? The typical representation of hourly activity rates in construction work sampling is a time series stacked bar chart.
11) What are the three steps of the planning improvement process: The three steps of the planning improvement process are list probably causes, analyze alternatives, and create a plan for improvement implementation.
12) What is the length of sample duration for the results shown in Figure 2? The length of sample duration for the results shown in figure 2 is 1 hour.
13) What is the total number of recorded observations in Figure 2? The total number of recorded observations in figure 2 is 109.
14) What are the seven “sampling categories” used for the study performed in Figure 3? The seven sampling categories used for the study performed in figure 3 are direct work, prep work, tools/equipment, material handling, waiting, travel and personal.
15) Name three typical causes of excessive material handling detailed in the study. Three typical causes of excessive material handling detailed in the study are poor site layout, disorganized material laydown yards, and damaged or incorrect materials.

Section 2: Work Sampling Field Rating (70 points)
Select a construction site that you can observe over some period of time. This can be an active site that you visit, view from afar, or watch recorded videos. You will perform an Activity Analysis on this site. Sampling observations should be performed in 10 minute intervals for 3 separate samples. Use the chart provided below to assign safety performance to each observation (you will need to extend the chart based on how many observations you make). A minimum of 100 observations is required.

After your sampling is complete, analyze your observation data. Perform a statistical analysis and discuss results of the dataset. Create graphical representations to show your data and analysis efforts. The graphical representation of the data is shown below. The data indicated that direct work could be improved in the first two observations. There were many observations of material handling and preparatory work.
