Case Problem 1. Pelican Stores
Pelican Stores, a division of National Clothing, is a chain of women's clothing stores operating nationwide. The chain recently ran a promotion in which discount coupons were sent to customers at other National Clothing stores. Data collected for a sample of 100 credit card transactions at Pelican Stores during one day while the promotion was running is contained in the DATA file called PelicanStores. Table 2.19 shows a part of the data set. The Proprietary Card payment method refers to charges made using a National Clothing credit card. Customers who made a purchase using a discount coupon are called promotional customers, and customers who made a purchase but did not use a discount coupon are called regular customers. Because the promotional coupons were not sent to regular Pelican Stores customers, management considers sales made to persons presenting the promotional coupons as sales that would not otherwise be made. Of course, Pelican also hopes promotional customers will continue shopping at its stores.
The image shows a table with ten rows and eight columns. The column headings say: Customer, Customer Type, Items, Net Sales, Payment Method, Gender, Marital Status, and Age. Row 1 says: 1, Regular, 1, thirty-nine point five zero, Discover, Male, Married, 32. Row 2 says: 2, Promotional, 1, one hundred two point four zero, Owner Card, Female, Married, 36. Row 3 says: 3, Regular, 1, twenty-two point five zero, Owner Card, Female, Married, 32. Row 4 says: 4, Promotional, 5, one hundred four zero, Owner Card, Female, Married, 28 Row 5 says: 5, Regular, 2, fifty-four dot zero zero, Master Card, Female, Married, 34. Three vertical dots are shown below row 5. Row 6 says: 96, Regular, 1, thirty and nine point five zero, Master Card, Female, Married, 44. Row 7 says: 97, Promotional, 9, two hundred fifty-three point zero zero, Owner Card, Female, Married, 30. Row 8 says: 98, Promotional, 10, two hundred and eight seven point five nine, Owner Card, Female, Married, 52 years old.
Most of the variables shown in Table 2.19 are self-explanatory, but two of them require some clarification.
Items
The total number of items purchased.
net sales
The total amount ($) charged to the credit card
Pelican management would like to use this sample data to understand its customer base and evaluate promotion involving discount coupons.
Management Report
Use the tabular and graphical methods of descriptive statistics to help management develop a customer profile and evaluate the promotional campaign. At a minimum, your report should include the following:
1.
Percent frequency distribution for key variables.
2.
A bar chart or pie chart that shows the number of customer purchases attributable to the payment method.
3.
A cross-tabulation of customer type (regular or promotional) versus net sales. Comment
on any similarities or differences present.
4.
A scatter plot to explore the relationship between net sales and customer age.

As we can see in the scatter diagram, there is no correlation between age and net sales, so there is no dependence between the variables that determines a relationship between them.
