Objectives of this project
(Main theme of this project). a.
The problem you want to observe/measure/evaluate. To observe the implementation of a new graduate RN mentorship program and observe the effects it has on one- and five-year retention rates.
b.
Measurement(s) you can use to evaluate this problem.
1. RN retention rates at 1 year
2. RN retention rates at 5 years
3. NPC (Nurse Professional Competence) Scale
4. PAMI (Principles of Adult Mentoring Inventory) (55 question survey utilizing Likert Scale)
c.
Special intervention to improve the potential problem you listed in “a”.
1.Use of 8-week RN fellowship program
6
AHS604-2
2.General nursing orientation
2
Target subjects for the project (Be specific)
New graduate adult float pool RNs at the University of Minnesota Medical Center – West Bank

3.
Find two journal articles which have topics/keywords you proposed for your project.
Post the topic of your interest, target population, intervention, and measurement(s) you plan to use to evaluate the
success of your intervention in the L1 Wikis for feedback and approval. If you cannot find any article related to the topic (key words) you will do the research on, you should revise your topic accordingly).
To search for the related journal articles, you can use ISU Library’s online databases. There are several routes to locate the databases such as:
ISU Library link http://lib.indstate.edu/
---> Articles & Databases ---> Databases A-Z (scroll down) ---> There are many databases to choose from. CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature), EBSCOhost, and Proquest are examples of databases commonly selected by students
. - -> type in your key words, and check on “Full Text, “Peer reviewed”, and “Scholarly journals”
when you start the search a.
Source of the first article: Use APA style (6
th
edition) for your citations. If you have questions, a tutorial program is available for you from the ISU library link
located on the sidebar or http://lib.indstate.edu/

AHS604-4
List the variables you need to collect
Part I
Background information of the person/place (need to list at least 3 variables used to describe the background information of your subjects such as ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, education, and annual income etc...
. 1.
Health care experience
2.
Age
3.
Gender
4.
Outside environmental influence
5.
Educational experience (2-year vs 4-year RN)
6
Part II
Intervention
(propose the intervention that you identify from your literature review)
1.
Use of 8-week RN fellowship program
2.
General orientation
6
Part III
To evaluate the result of the intervention you proposed
(to know the results of an intervention, you need to collect the “measurement” you proposed to do “before” the intervention and “after” the intervention. For example, knowledge, satisfaction scores before and after the intervention; muscle strength, nerve conductivity before and
after the intervention. Usually you will need to have 2 readings/measurements from the same subject)
1. retention rate goal
2. retention rate at 1 year
3. retention rate at 5 years
4. NPC (Nurse Professional Competence) Scale
6
Part IV
List factors which have influence on the “measurement” or “intervention” of your interest. Or any data you want to collect/explore. 1.
Health care experience of mentor
2.
Length of mentorship program
3.
Frequency of mentor check ins
6
Table 2. The data collection form/questionnaire for your project based on the information you listed in Table 1 (Part I to IV). There should be no more than 10 questions. ( -1 point for each wrong answer for each cell, a total of 50 points). Ultimately, at least 4-5 quantitative (fill in the blank) variables should be included in your questionnaire. Usually, the quantitative variables are related to the measurements of the intervention you proposed. For example, BMIs of a subject before and after participating in a weight watch program.
Quantitative variables must include a unit of measurement, if applicable. For example:
What is your annual income? $ ____
AHS604-5
What was your LDL after
the weight loss program? ______mg/dl
What was your LDL before
the weight loss program? ______mg/dl
How much do you weigh? _______ lbs.
This will be the first draft of the data collection form for your final project. You will be modifying your Final Project throughout the semester
as you continue building your dataset. Nothing is set in stone and changes/revisions are to be expected. You need to include variables
that can collect the following 4 major types (A, B, C, D) of information
from your subjects: (10 points will be taken off when you miss to include variables in the following categories). You need to identify each variable you use with the group it belongs to.
A.
Background information of the subjects [For example: gender, age, income, education, etc.]
B.
Type of intervention (in qualitative format
. [For example: receiving treatment (YES, NO); education/training methods (A, B, C); treatment protocols (A, B, C), etc.]
C.
Index you will use to measure your subjects [For example: blood sugar levels, satisfaction levels, knowledge scores, oxygen consumption levels, Morse fall scale etc.]
a.
before the intervention
b.
after the intervention
D.
Any variables that have impact to the subjects or intervention or index [For example: current medication, comorbidity, hospital admission status, length of experience etc.]

Questions used for data collection
Provide list of answers for multiple choice questions. Use numeric data entry. Do not have more than 4 categories for each question, including Likert scale questions (if
you collect the data in an Ordinal measure).
If you collect Likert scale variable as a SCALE measure, you can collect from 0 to 10. See PowerPoint for detail Variable Name

Remember the variable types and measures depend on the way you ask the subjects questions on the questionnaire or data collection form. If you ask people to fill in the number, e.g., 21 years, then it is a QUANTITATIVE DATA with a SCALE measure. However, if you break the number into different categories and let people choose the answer as
AHS604-8
multiple choice, then it is a QUALITATIVE DATA with a NOMINAL or ORDINAL measure.
Please do not use
more than 4
categories/multiple choice for qualitative data (nominal or ordinal) variables/measures.
2.
If you intend to use a Likert scale question to collect your data, the measure of the variable will depend on the way collect the data and the way you intend to analyze the data. You need to define them accordingly. a.
as a quantitative data, collect your data as a scale measure format (fill in blank with a value)
b.
as a qualitative data, collect your data as an ordinal measure with no more than 4 categories
