1.
Identify a problem-solving technique or method you have used in a previous situation and explain how it helped you. How might problem-solving methods be different in diverse cultures or fields of work? How can effective problem-solving help you in your academic journey?
When I start to struggle with an assignment or just any task in general to the point of frustration, I always outsource. When I use the term “outsource,” however, I am not suggesting that I find someone to do the work for me as that would be counter productive to the overarching goal. Instead, I try and ask someone with prior knowledge of the topic what they think or read about other’s experiences in similar scenarios. I believe reaching out to find answers can come in an infinite number of forms in our vast universe. For example, if I were to be doing a project describing the “Christ the Redeemer” statue overlooking Rio, I would have to speak to someone informed or research via the library or internet myself. Yet, if my oldest brother’s girlfriend needed to, she could “outsource” to her environment and go look at it herself and read any information available on site because she lives in Rio de Janeiro. By doing this she might get a more traditional explanation on the statue, rather than my more modernized internet article. Depending on culture, work experience, or environment in general, problem-solving is all around us being practiced in different ways, but our most important asset for learning will always be one another. 2.
Identify your learning style and explain how knowing/learning about your learning style helped support your success throughout this course.
I have noticed I always retain information the best when I experience it in some fashion. When it
comes to classifying my learning style, I would fit into the categories of a visual and tactile learner. Knowing and understanding this has helped me approach my educational career and other areas of learning in a more direct way catered towards me. Instead of continuously trying new ways to approach individual problems, I have an idea of which direction I should start in. 3.
Identify which of the five successful habits of an SNHU student have been most helpful for you throughout this course. Explain how those habits have helped you.
The number one habit “Strive to submit all assignments” has been my main focus for both my courses this term. It was very important that no matter what my grade ended up being this term, I completed all assignments and the courses themselves. This helps me recognize that moving forward I am absolutely capable of managing my time properly to fulfill my duties as a student. 4.
Explain how you will stay on track in your courses and overcome interruptions that may impact your schedule.
I will continue the habits I have been through this term. By this I mean that I will continue to make sure I plan for time during the week that could be a “buffer” period to ensure I always have enough time for my assignments. In order to alleviate the stress of running out of time I am sure to add blocks of time throughout the week that, if necessary, can be filled with schoolwork. For example, I asked my place of work if I could have Thursdays and Sundays as my
off days to ensure the two days, I have something due, I had the whole day to proofread and submit. 5.
Choose two SNHU resources (departments and resources that are part of SNHU) and two social supports (people, places, and things outside of SNHU) that will help the most with achieving your mission and goals, and that will help you prioritize your time. Also indicate why these resources and social supports are key for your success.
24/7 Online tutoring
The benefits of 24/7 tutoring are described within the name itself. The fact that SNHU offers students an option to quickly hop online and get connected with an available tutor whenever necessary, truly “keeps the ball rolling.” Instead of having to wait for the
next school day or an available slot with an already busy professor, students can have their questions addressed as soon as they connect. This keeps the flow of learning continuous, as the student might be stuck on one particular concept and can get the help they need in real time.
Advisor
While attending my boarding school for four years, I noticed my closest faculty friend and biggest advocate was always my advisor. When I tell people he was there yelling at me at my lowest low in high school they usually do not first thing “Oh how beneficial!” However, until this day I could see the disappointment in his eyes when he discovered me heading down the wrong path one day. He was angry not at what I was doing, but at
what I was throwing away. I was burning away the opportunity given to me to attend the best high school in the country and the words he said to me that night meant absolutely nothing. However, today I can say that was the most important conversation anyone has ever had with me. My advisor would help me academically in any way I ask, but never did I expect him to help me recognize and appreciate the gifts I had been given. Although not all advisors are so personable, even ten percent of that man’s care will be more than enough. For this reason alone, I will always make sure to keep in touch with my advisors.
Family
My family has always been the biggest supporter in my life. Whether it be attending Berklee for a semester to study music production and sound engineering, to rekindling my education here at SNHU on a Geoscience track. Without the support of my family, I would never have been confident or motivated enough to start again in the first place. I would also feel much more fulfilled if I could hand my mother the degree she has always
wished for me. Personally, I came back to school for myself, but the happiness it brought her was enough to understand I have to complete this degree or a four-year degree.
Current Work
Although I won’t be able to work as much if I decide to transfer to in person classes, this first term my boss has been unfathomably flexible. She supports my decision to complete a degree and has never once denied me any sort of change I request in light of
my new responsibility. To see my boss support my choice gives me the extra confirmation that this truly is the best thing for me. If my boss is willing to lose a full-
time employee to a part-time one, then I must be doing something right. 6.
List your personal academic mission statement.
I began my career here at SNHU working towards a geoscience degree. The reason I chose this degree is not only because it allows me to fulfill certain requirements for me to seamlessly transfer into a physics degree and eventually a
career in renewable/sustainable energy, but it also provides knowledge that will be useful to me in achieving my goal. I did not want to rekindle my education immediately with in person classes, and geoscience, being online, and relevant to my goal.
For a while I was looking for degrees that would place me in a field where I could generate a large income, however, learning about any of the sciences seemed to motivate me to educate myself further. I believe a career in physics will allow my mind to expand to more than just “ticking boxing,” for a job but also diving into the unknown trying to shed light on preexisting facts. I hope to land myself in a field that allows me to study new ways to produce cleaner and sustainable energy sources. A creative and well-educated mind would fit right into a profession like this one. The reason for getting my degree in physics is far from my original thought, “to make money.” Instead, I have noticed my reasons for coming back to school are both selfish and selfless. First, my selfish reason is that I feed off exploration, whether it be online reading or outside walking. Physics looks to answer all the questions about matter and energy. Although my exploration of the nature of all things around us would be for my own mind, the selfless portion could be the benefits a potential discovery could have on my community or the world. I feel after a long search, physics could be the topic that finally allows my selfish tendencies of learning simply to know the answers, to align perfectly with my selfless goals. 7.
List your THREE short-term academic goals.
Goal #1: Submit all assignments completed to the best of my ability and on time.
i.
It is very important for me to keep deadlines. I feel a sense of pride in my punctuality and personally, handing in an assignment on time is more fulfilling than an “A.” This feeling, however, puts me in a position that forces me to start assignments earlier to ensure I meet deadlines. Allowing more time for an assignment will also give me the opportunity to edit, or if need be, redo an assignment so I can make sure my best work is always submitted.
Goal #2: Weigh Stress Properly.
i.
Sometimes I tend to put more pressure on an assignment or myself than necessary. Instead of just checking what I must do next week, I tend to wait until the moment I begin working. Although I may be completing the assignment on time or early, I allow this looming cloud of stress to distract me from focusing on the actual learning instead of just completing tasks. By understanding the time necessary for each assignment, I can better plan and not feel as if I need
to rush through something due next week.
Goal #3 (Different from that in Journal 4): Reach out to Others.
i.
Even after my first term ends, I still sometimes fall into the trap that college has to be an individual experience. Instead of viewing the classroom or discussion page as a collaborative environment I tend to see it as separate people coming together to learn from just one. This has hindered my ability to learn as well as make connections with those who could be beneficial to my life or me to theirs in a social, health, or academic sense. By learning with others collaboratively you can learn about many different ways people think about the same problem. 8.
Describe the importance of setting goals on your academic journey.
Without setting goals during any journey, it makes the journey itself seem pointless. Why do anything if not for some end goal? Whether it be to get a better job or simply make yourself smarter
or being nice because someone looks sad, anytime you set out to do something the only way to stay focused and motivated is to understand why or what you’re doing this for. In terms of my academic journey, without the simplest end goal of just completing a degree, what is stopping you from quitting anytime it becomes difficult? 9.
Explain how you are going to stay motivated to achieve your goals and mission statement, based on what you have learned in SNHU 107.
In order to stay motivated I will constantly remind myself that I need to be flexible. If tomorrow I

lose all data on my computer and have to redo this assignment, I need to maintain the idea that this is just another bump in the road and not the end. No journey is an easy one, especially academic, so to think I could prepare for everything that the next four years has to bring would set me up for failure. By using the resources I have available to me along with my support system I can maintain my composure whenever a “world shattering” problem arises, adapt, and continue pushing forwards with my education. 10.
Explain why an awareness of diversity is beneficial to giving and receiving feedback when collaborating with others.
Without an awareness of diversity while giving feedback you are not only at risk of assuming something that may not be accurate, but also missing out on a whole new category of education. Throughout a college career one can meet people from all over the country or even the world. By discussing ideas and concepts with those all over, keeping diversity in mind helps us understand different ways of thinking from the region that person has come from. The culture you are familiar with might be lacking a certain way of thinking about the same topic as someone else, and vice versa. 11.
Explain why it is important to take ownership, be vulnerable, ask for help, and have an open mind to achieve your goals.
If an individual cannot take ownership of their mistakes and achievements, its impossible for those to ever be recognized by that person. By owning something that is going on with yourself you are taking the first step to fixing it or learning something new about it. When making yourself vulnerable
and opening up to ask for help, you are inviting new ways of thinking from other intellectual people. It’s a way of learning about oneself that can be done anywhere at any time, and only leaves us with more knowledge than prior to asking. 12.
Explain what your biggest takeaway was from this course.
My biggest takeaway from this course is that I can complete the goals I set my mind to. Using the skills and resources discussed throughout the course I know that I can continue to maintain the focus necessary to complete my degree as long as I keep up with these same strategies listed above.
I also learned that although these goals seem set in stone, the world is not sitting still, but constantly
moving; therefore, I must maintain the ability to change my goals if necessary to fit my changing brain, as well as the changing environment.
