Report
Samantha Talley CJ 315: Victimology Southern New Hampshire University Rape and Sexual Assault According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the definition of rape is forced sexual intercourse including both psychological coercion as well as physical force. Forced sexual intercourse means penetration by the offender(s). Includes attempted rapes, male as well as female victims, and both heterosexual and same sex rape. Attempted rape includes verbal threats of rape. The definition of sexual assault is a wide range of victimizations, separate from rape or attempted rape. These crimes include attacks or attempted attacks generally involving unwanted sexual contact between victim and offender. Sexual assaults may or may not involve force and include such things as grabbing or fondling. It also includes verbal threats. Based on the data provided by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the number of victims who reported sexual assault or rape reported in the year 2018 was the biggest increase between the year 2015-2019 with a total of 734,630. This number averages out to 2.7 in every 1000 people to fall victim to these crimes. The number significantly dropped the following year in 2019 to 459,310 or 1.7 in every 1000 people. Unfortunately, anyone can become a victim to sexual assault or rape because the act of the crime is based on the offender’s preference. Females are more likely to be affected by these crimes than men. Per the data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, Females of white ethnicity in the age range of 25-34 are the most targeted for crimes such as rape and sexual assault. The most common risk factors for victims are alcohol or drug use. Most often, women fall victim to the crime after being out consuming drugs or alcohol due to them not being coherent enough to understand what is occurring at the time. Other risk factors may include being too friendly to others, being younger in age, having a disability, or having a lower income and less known. Often the offender has issues such as sexual fantasies, lack of concern for others, aggressive behaviors, and exposure to sexual content. There are many different factors on what could cause an offender to act on crimes such as sexual assault or rape according to the CDC.
