Home Remodel Project Purpose: You have found a home to purchase. You are excited to do some remodeling, but you have a limited budget. You decide you can replace the flooring in one part of the house with a budget of $3500. You also plan to upgrade some landscaping. The purpose of this assignment is to use geometry and algebraic techniques to determine how much flooring you can replace given the flooring you have chosen and calculate the amount of mulch needed for the landscaping. Assignment Goal: Finding area, and volume, converting them into meaningful units, researching various options, and estimating project costs are just a few practical applications of mathematics involved in home improvement projects. In this assignment, you will address a real-world situation to complete a renovation project on a budget. Instructions: Answer the following questions about your remodel. Since floor plans for the home you chose in the Budget Project might not be available, use the following floor plan: Description of the Floor Plan: The diagram shows the floor plan of a house with two bedrooms, a bathroom, a living/dining room, a master bedroom, a master bathroom, and a kitchen that includes the breakfast nook. The following dimensions are given:
Bedrooms 1 and 2 are both 13 feet by 13 feet. The bathroom is 4 feet by 8 feet. The dimensions for the living and dining space are not given and are not necessary to complete the project. The Master bedroom is 14 feet by 13 feet. The Master bathroom is 5 feet by 13 feet. The kitchen (including the breakfast nook) consists of a rectangular area that is 13 feet by 20 feet and a bumped-out breakfast nook that is centered along the 20-foot front-facing wall, three feet from the corner. The front of the nook is 10 feet across, and the angled sides are both 6 feet. Project: Calculate the square footage of the following rooms. (Show all necessary calculations, including formulas. Round to two decimals places as needed.) Room Calculation Room Calculation Kitchen (with breakfast nook) 13 · 20 = 260𝑓𝑡 2 1/2 (10 + 14) · 5. 65 = 67. 80𝑓𝑡 2 260 + 67. 80 = 327. 80𝑓𝑡 2 Bedroom #1 13 · 13 = 169𝑓𝑡 2 Master Bedroom 14 · 13 = 182𝑓𝑡 2 Bedroom #2 13 · 13 = 169𝑓𝑡 2 Master Bathroom 13 · 5 = 65𝑓𝑡 2 Small Bathroom 4 · 8 = 32𝑓𝑡 2 You have a budget of $3500 for your remodeling project. You will choose to replace the flooring in either the (1) the Master Bedroom and Master Bathroom or (2) the two smaller bedrooms or (3) the kitchen. Which area are you choosing to replace the flooring and why? I choose to replace the two smaller bedrooms, because I want them to match and look nice. Through some research on flooring costs from a home improvement store, you will be choosing a material for the flooring. For example, tile, carpet, hardwood, etc. Explain the type, price, and retailer of the flooring material you would like to use for your project. What is your reasoning for choosing this particular type of flooring? For this project I will be using a hybrid waterproof oak hardwood flooring it is $3.49/sq. Ft. or $65.54 a case and the retailer I chose was Home Depot. I chose this type of flooring because I like the
shade of oak plus I am clumsy and drop everything plus hardwood flooring is a lot easier to clean than carpet. Is the flooring sold in square footage or square yardage? If necessary, convert your units. How much will you need to purchase? What will be the total cost? This particular flooring is sold by square footage so it is not necessary to convert units. I will need to purchase 338 and my total cost would be $1179.62. 169 + 169 = 𝑓𝑡 2 338𝑓𝑡 2 · $3. 49 = What other costs would be necessary to finish this project? Are you within your budget? If you have extra money, what will you spend it on for this project? For this project, there may be a cost to dump off your old flooring and an installation fee if you are not doing it yourself. I am well within my budget for this project and have extra money. I would spend the extra money upgrading features such as curtains and bedding for the two remodeled rooms. You will be upgrading your landscape at your house. You will be creating a rectangular mulch border along the length of the side of the house where bedrooms #1 and #2 are located. The mulch border will be 3 ft. wide and 5 inches deep. How many cubic feet of mulch will you need? I would need 390 cubic feet of mulch for the border. 26 · 3 · 5 = Your local nursery is running a special on mulch, $40/yd 3 with delivery. The nursery will only deliver full cubic yards. Determine how many cubic yards you will need to have delivered. How much is the total cost of the mulch? I will need 15 cubic yards of mulch and the cost will be in total. 15 · 40 = $600 Instructions for Submission: Enter your responses in the table provided or after the question.
