Preliminary Writing Plan
I selected to concentrate on the Cherokee “Trail of Tears” for my historical event
analysis. I have chosen to focus on the Indian Removal Act and Treaty of New Echota (1836),
which led to the Native American Cherokee people being forced from their land and persecuted
in the process. The Cherokee “Trail of Tears” was historically significant because it shows how
the U.S. government unjustly stripped land from Native Americans and mistreated them in the
process of relocating them to Oklahoma, Indian territory.
In researching the Indian Removal Act and Treaty of New Echota, I will try to showcase
how that led to the Cherokee “Trail of Tears.”
In doing so, I will try to respond to my research
question:
What did the U.S. gain from passing the Indian Removal Act and Treaty of New Echota
(1836), and what were the disadvantages for the Cherokee natives?
Why was it so important for the U.S. government to take the lands of Native Americans?
Was all this done solely because of greed or other factors? Was discrimination against the Native
Americans a driving factor for them being forced from their lands?
The terms I have used up to this point for my research are as follows: Trail of tears,
Indian removal act AND Trail of tears, Trail of tears AND Indian removal act AND Treaty of
New Echota.
My examination of this subject need to include how the U.S. benefited from the seizing
of lands and how the Native Americans were affected. A secondary source that is beneficial to
my research is
“The Cherokee Nation and the Trail of Tears”
by Theda Perdue and Michael
Green (New York, NY, 2007). This book goes into detail about the “Trail of Tears,” Indian
Removal Act, Treaty of New Echota, and injustices endured by Native Americans. I chose this
book because it covers all the important parts of my research question, so it makes it completely
relevant for investigating the events. It is different from my second secondary source because it
has more detail on the “Trail of Tears.” I chose this source because it helps answer the second
part of my research question regarding the disadvantages for the Native Americans.
Another secondary source that would be of benefit is
“Toward Cherokee Removal: Land,
Violence, and the White Man’s Chance”
by Adam J. Pratt (Athens, GA, 2020). The book is
appropriate for my event because it showcases how the U.S. government and non-Native
Americans benefited from Indian removal from their lands. It is different from my first
secondary source because it covers the first part of my research question regarding how the U.S.
benefited from Native lands. I chose this source because it helps answer the first half of my
research question.
