Library Assignment: HIST 1302A Date Due: 30 September 2022 Instructions: Please read carefully and respond to all of the questions below. The responses need only to be as long as required. You will not need to cite sources for this exercise. If you are unable to locate any of the material described below, a Library staff person will likely be nearby, and will be happy to help you. 1. Near room # 122 (on Level 1), there are five (5) globes: Please select two (2), and state what each of them describes. a. The Sky and Telescope Mars Globe describes the terrain, landing sites of rovers and the different colors representing different elevation changes. b. The Sky and Telescope Venus Globe, produced in 1995, shows the data of Venus collected by the Magellan orbiter. The elevation and landforms are all included on the globe. 2. How many physical copies of Douglas Mackay’s book, entitled The Honourable Company are there on the shelves? What colour are the covers? There are three copies of the book, one in maroon, one in green and one in blue. 3. On the 5th floor, near room 506, there is a display of vintage musical instruments. Why do you think that are on display in the library? They are on display in the library to showcase the historic life of Jacob Siskind. He was a well-known critic of the classical arts, and journalist. They are showcasing the instruments to “engage the audiences versed in classical music and attract audiences less familiar with the genre” (Chamber of music society). 4. According to the Debates of the House of Commons (the volumes are located on Level 1, in the Government Documents section), on 18 June 1869 John A. Macdonald moved the second reading of several bills. Please name two of them. The book has gone missing, and I am unable to locate the answer. Staff helped me and we were both unable to find it. 5. According to the Census of Canada, what were the populations of the following cities in 1871: Montreal, Toronto, Halifax, Fredericton. You may be able to locate this information online. The Census states that Montreal had a population of 107,225 people, Toronto had 56,092, Halifax had 29,582 and Fredericton had 6,006 people.
