EDUC 750 Discussion Post: Valid and Ethical Conduct of Research
Whenever research is conducted, it is essential for it to be conducted
ethically and with validity because its contents can be impactful and
valuable while exposing an in-depth understanding and possible solutions to
current educational issues. Check and Schutt (p. 138, 2017) state that "when
the conclusions of empirical reality are correct, the goal of validity has been
reached." To ensure the research is valid, one must consider the three parts
of validity: measurement validity, generalizability, and casual validity.
In terms of measurement, the researcher must ensure that they have
accurately measured what they set out to measure and that the tools or
methods used for measuring align with the variables being measured. Next is
for researchers to acquire a small sample of participants from a larger group
since it is impossible to survey large populations (Check & Schutt, 2017). A
solid, generalized sample requires prior knowledge about the group, specific
planning, and a structured process for selecting participants (Check & Schutt,
2017). Lastly, casual validity refers to the analysis of the cause-and-effect
relationship within the research, so researchers must continually revisit the
casual validity throughout their research process (Check & Schutt, 2017).
For research to remain ethical, there are five guidelines for researchers to
follow: protect the participants from harm, all participants must willingly
volunteer by giving consent, researchers must be honest about their identity,
participants remain anonymous unless they voluntarily consent otherwise,
and the benefits need to outweigh the risks (Check & Schutt, 2017).
Protecting the participants means trying to predict any potential harm.
Participants should give their written consent after they have been fully
informed and understand the research. The consent form should be clear,
detailed, and understandable for all potential participants about the
research, its risks and benefits, an explanation of maintaining confidentiality,
and how their consent can be withdrawn at any time (Check & Schutt, 2017).
Being open and honest about the methods and findings will help strengthen
the validity of the research (Check & Schutt, 2017). Finally, researchers
should remain impartial by setting aside their biases and personal agendas
(Check & Schutt, 2017).
Based on this week's reading, it is clear that even before starting the
research, much planning is involved, starting with developing a sound
research question. Also, it is important to view my research question and
process as a whole from multiple perspectives so that I am able to produce a
valid and ethical research process and results. 1 Corinthians 10:24 states,
"Let no one seek his own good, but that of his neighbor" (The Bible App,
n.d.). This verse reminds me that although our research questions and topics
may derive from personal experience or interests, the process and results
are ultimately to inform and enhance the field of education, not myself. I also
believe that this verse serves as a reminder of the guidelines needed for
valid and ethical research because I am reminded to think of the benefits and
welfare of others instead of myself.
