The
Watchman
Style
Situation:
The
watchman
style
of
policing
is
used
to
maintain
order
maintenance
within
the
community
(Dempsey
et
al.,
2019).
Those
who
choose
the
watchman
style,
are
not
afraid
to
rough
up
lawbreakers
and
ignore
minor
offenses
like
the
violation
of
a
traffic
law.
A
situation
where
this
style
may
occur
is
in
the
world
of
a
DEA
agent.
If
the
DEA
agent
is
investigating
a
drug
cartel
and
trying
to
find
the
person
on
top,
they
may
threaten
and
be
aggressive
with
known
drug
dealers
who
are
a
part
of
the
cartel,
but
nowhere
near
the
top.
The
DEA
agent
may
“rough
up”
a
street
dealer
so
that
the
officer
can
gain
helpful
information.
Culture:
The
community
may
view
the
application
of
the
Watchman
Style
of
policing
negatively,
particularly
if
a
pattern
is
observed
with
the
distribution
of
discretion.
Officers
with
low
morale,
low
income,
and
little
training
frequently
employ
the
time
watchman
technique.
The
Legalistic
Style
Situation:
The
legalistic
style
is
all
about
enforcing
exactly
what
the
law
says
at
all
times
(Dempsey
et
al.,
2019).
The
legalistic
style
makes
a
lot
of
arrests
and
issues
many
citations,
they
focus
mainly
on
enforcing
the
law.
A
situation
where
the
legalistic
style
could
be
employed
is
if
teens
are
out
past
the
city-mandated
curfew.
An
officer
using
the
legalistic
style
would
arrest
all
of
them
on
the
spot.
Culture:
Larger
communities
with
various
demographics
frequently
employ
this
type
of
policing
because
it
enables
law
enforcement
to
treat
everyone
equally.
When
using
this
approach,
officers
or
departments
will
make
every
effort
to
ensure
the
safety
of
everyone
while
also
maintaining
an
air
of
professionalism.
The
Service
Style
Situation:
The
service
style
aims
to
provide
people
with
resources
and
have
low
arrest
rates
(Dempsey
et
al.,
2019).
This
style
could
be
considered
the
opposite
of
both
of
the
other
styles.
Those
using
the
service
style,
are
less
likely
to
arrest
someone
and
would
not
rough
someone
up.
They
simply
focus
on
serving
the
needs
of
the
community
(Dempsey
et
al.,
2019).
A
situation
where
this
style
would
take
place
is
if
a
suburban
high
school
asks
the
police
department
to
do
a
locker
check
throughout
the
school.
Then,
one
officer finds
a
canister
of
prescription
pills
in
a
teen’s
locker,
but
the
name
on
the
bottle
is
not
the
name
of
the
student
or
anyone
known
to
be
a
part
of
the
student’s
family.
An
officer
using
the
service
style
would
call
the
teen
into
the
office,
express
the
weight
of
a
drug
charge,
and
then
provide
the
teen
and
his
family
with
resources
on
drug
addiction,
but
not
make
an
arrest.
That
officer
may
even
check
in
with
the
family
or
do
a
school-wide
assembly
on
the
negative
effects
of
using
drugs.
Culture:
Departments
that
employ
this
strategy
typically
depend
on
what
the
public
thinks
of
the
way
the
police
behave.
This
strategy
has
the
advantage
of
not
adding
an
arrest
record
to
the
history
for
first-time
offenders
or
people
who made
an
error
like
adolescents.
When
attempting
to
satisfy
the
public
and
others
who
interact
with
the
police,
departments
employ
this
strategy.
