5-4-1/6-2-2 Discussion: The Ancient World. The Roman Empire. Artifact: The Roman Colosseum (also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre because the Flavian Dynasty ruled during this time and was responsible for building the Colosseum of behalf of the citizens of Rome). This large Amphitheatre was constructed during the Roman Empire (completed in 80 AD) in the heart of Rome, Italy, and I believe it was created for entertainment for the citizens of Rome. It is about 615 feet by 510 and built of stone and concrete and was the largest of its kind during the Roman Empire. Seating more than 50,000, the seating was designed in order of social status, for example, there was an Emperor’s Box, seating for political and important officials, citizens (by gender), soldiers, and slaves. There were even trap doors, and a west entrance, called the Gate of Death, where the dead were carried out. I believe the creation of the Roman Colosseum was indicative of the culture and values of this era. They had an interest in watching sporting events (chariot races and equestrian events), wild animal fights, executions, celebrations, and gladiator combats and this was a way to express their interests. One of the most popular events at the Colosseum and in Roman Culture was gladiator games (for example, slaves or criminals battling it out in front of an audience as a form of entertainment and as a means for freedom, honor, and acceptance). As many cultures express themselves through artifacts, I believe this was indicative in the creation of the Roman Colosseum. The Roman Culture was known for its architecture, large monuments and arenas, sports and entertainment, and its political and social structures.
The Middle Ages. The Medieval Times. Artifact: Notre-Dame-de-Paris (Notre Dame Cathedral located in Paris, France) The cultures and values of this era were representative of a class system (kings, queens, peasants, serfs), the rising power of the Catholic Church and the growth of Islam (Holy Crusades). During the Middle Ages, churches and cathedrals were characteristic of this era. One of the most famous and oldest cathedrals constructed in this era was the Notre Dame de Paris (Our Lady of Paris). Initiated by Bishop Maurice de Sully, I believe he had it built to express his pride of the Catholic Church and to honor the importance of the Church in Paris, and had it created as a place of worship, to use for meeting places, secular reasons, and mass. Additionally, Paris was rising in political and religious power during this time, and King Louis VII was influential in the financial support of this beautiful structure. Gothic-style architecture was expressed as a part of culture during the middle ages and this cathedral was the first of its kind to use flying buttresses. This beautiful cathedral also included rose windows, stained glass, sculptures, statutes, portals, paintings, gargoyles, organs, and bell towers (10 bells).
The Renaissance Period. Artifact: David, by Michelangelo. The statute of David was created by Michelangelo as one of many statutes to be located at the Florence Cathedral, but due to its size and weight is was not practical, so the eventual site at the Piazza della Signoria outside the Palazzio Vecchio, in Florence, Italy. (The original statute is now located in the Accademia Gallery in Florence, Italy to protect it from damage). The purpose of Michelangelo’s marble sculpture of David, was to depict David carrying the slingshot across his back, at the exact moment before his battle with Goliath. David was a

typical subject of artists during the Renaissance Period. Humanistic and biblical art was part of the cultural and values during the Renaissance Period. Many artists during this time created the biblical hero, David. (However, Michelangelo’s creation was different, it was before his victory over Goliath.) The statue of David appeared muscular, naked, slender and quite a realistic impression of the male human body which was typical of the culture and values during this period and most typical of the artistic creations and expressions of Michelangelo. I believe Michelangelo felt the need to express himself through his art, through his sculptures, based on his deep religious beliefs.
