Relevant Background ______________________________________________________________ ___ Both countries are located in the Middle East: Israel is a country along the eastern coastline of the Mediterranean Sea, and Palestine is a small territory that includes the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem. Israel surrounds Palestine geographically. Israel is considered a state in the United Nations, while Palestine is not officially known as a state. II. Body 1 a. Topic Sentence ____________________________________________________________________ __ Palestine is a predominantly Muslim country, while Israel is a predominantly Zionist country. Both are fighting for ownership of the territory because it has religious ties to both religions (Islam and Judaism), not because they cannot live harmoniously as two different religions. b. The general relationship between religion and culture is complex .... This is particularly true of religions that have complex common origins, such as the Abrahamic faiths [Islam, Judaism, Christianity]. In fact, the very interrelatedness of these traditions betrays the causes of their interreligious rivalry and deadly historical conflicts .... " ii. Why your evidence is important _________________________________________________ ___ This clarifies how the conflict between Israel and Palestine is not a religious war: it involves religious motives, but is not entirely based on them being different religions because Muslims and Judaisms have lived together in harmony before. c. Concluding Sentence _______________________________________________________________ __ The Palestinians Arabs and the Israeli Jews are not at war because they exert contrasting religious views, rather because they have similar religious affiliations involving the same piece of land and Abrahamic revelations. III. Body 2: a. Topic Sentence ____________________________________________________________________ __ The two sides of the Palestine/Israel conflict use historical analogies to describe the Israelite's view of and the Palestinian's perspective of the same issue. b.
