Both countries are located in the Middle East: Israel is a country along the eastern coastline of the
Mediterranean Sea, and Palestine is a small territory that includes the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and
East Jerusalem. Israel surrounds Palestine geographically. Israel is considered a state in the United
Nations, while Palestine is not officially known as a state. However, the United Nations recognizes
the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) as a representation of the state and is included as a non-
member observer state.
