HIS 100 Module Five Activity Template: Historical Interpretations
Replace the bracketed text below with your responses.
Describe how exploring your research question improved your understanding of the historical roots of
your current event.
●
I think through exploring my research question, it really shows me that even though the
roots of my current event would like to be directly related to my historical event, they
are so vastly different that they almost can't be compared in any way. Even though they
have similar wants, the drive and way that their mission is being carried out is so
different. The civil rights movement has no true comparison when it comes to modern
movements.
Explain how biased perspectives influence what is known about both your historical and current events.
●
I'm not sure if it's bias that did this, but I wasn't taught very much at all about the civil rights
movement in school. Martin Luther King Jr. was always grazed over because of the holiday but
we never really took the time to study and read about the causes and the actions that were took
to make their movement a success. The BLM movement has a lot of bias for it and against it.
Leaving you to really have to do your own research in order to develop your own opinion on it,
and when you do research it, often times the violence and riots are being left out of articles I
found and they just focus on the cause of the outrage and not the actions that happened after.
Two wrongs don't make a right, so it's hard to get solid information without really digging on
each event and how it happened. Especially with how heavily influenced the media is with it.
Propose how the narrative about your historical event might change if it were told from a missing
perspective.
●
The narrative could change how the civil rights movement was scene if it was told from a
different perspective. The could have villainized the movement for boycotting the bus and they
could have stated that it hurt the economy.
Propose how the narrative about your current event might change if it were told from a missing
perspective.
●
I feel as though with the BLM movement, there is a lot of room for change in the narrative.
There is very vastly different narratives exposed in the media and portrayed. On one side, you
have a movement that is fighting back against an oppression system, and on the other you have
the violent and de-funding of the police that is exposed through investigation. In order to really
understand this movement you have to dig deeper than what the media is portraying and dig for
facts and not biased opinions given. Which can be hard when a narrative is being pushed so
heavily. Looking deeper is key for getting to the truth.
