community among online graduate African American students. The authors examined the
differences that occurred between African American and Caucasian students as it
pertained to learning and sense of community in online and hybrid courses.
3.
List the hypotheses; then, underline and label the corresponding independent/dependent
variables or

variables. Are there any covariates? If so, name them.
African American-only section of the course would achieve higher levels of learning and
stronger sense of community
than the
African American students in the mixed-race
section.
4.
What research design is used and why?
The authors utilized a causal-comparative research design which included self-reporting
questionnaires to ascertain information from the participants.
5.
What type of sampling method is used?
Two sections of graduate students enrolled in an online education courses. The
participants totaled 97; approximately 52% were African American and 48% were
Caucasian. The educators completed two separate surveys – one that related to learning
and another reported to classroom community.

What are the names of the instruments (provide a list)? Are the instruments valid and
reliable? Why or why not?

7.
Do the author(s) give enough detail regarding the procedure so that the study could be
replicated? How or how not?
The authors did not provide much detail as it pertained to the specific procedures used in
the study. They did explain that participants were not provided with any incentives;
however, the course professor expressed the importance of their participation in order to
improve learning. Students were not aware of their final when the surveys were
conducted.
8.
What type of statistical analysis is used and why?
Two analyses were conducted. One analysis consisted of the mixed race was compared to
the African American section. The second analysis examined three groups: mixed African
American group (AA from mixed race section), mixed Caucasian group (Caucasians from
mixed race section), and African American only group.
The authors used a one-way multivariance (MANOVA) using the groups as the
independent variables; course points, perceived learning, and classroom community as
the dependent variables.
9.
What are the major conclusions of the study? How do they relate to the hypothesis?
The authors reported the absence of face-to-face for African American students had a
negative impact on the classroom community which could the result of a lack of
nonverbal cues. It is important for students to have periodic face-to-face interactions with
their classmates and professors. A major implication of the study is that professors need
to utilize pedagogy that encourages African American students to articulate their
knowledge of information in a collaborative manner.
10. Do the author(s) suggest any future studies to resolve ambiguities in the present study or
to answer questions raised by the present study?
The authors did not suggest any further studies; however, they did address the limitation
of the study. Said limitations of the study are the consequence of a small sample of
participants that were a part of the same class. Furthermore, the sample population was
not representative of other schools, hence, making generalizations would not be feasible
or reliable.
