Module One Activity: Project Topic Exploration
o
Identify the topic you chose to explore.
The topic I will research is the Wounded Knee Occupation.
o
Explain what you already know about the chosen topic based on your personal history
or experiences.
This was my first reading into what happened during Wounded Knee Occupation. A few
years ago, my then 17-year-old niece, Leighla, mentioned wearing a Pocahontas-styled
costume for a High School Halloween event. During the event, Leighla’s American Indian
peer told Leighla that the American Indian’s garb is not a costume and that she should
educate herself before wearing someone’s history as a fashion. While I had difficulty
understanding the sentiment, I did some brief research and found out that American Indian
women are hypersexualized and have a high rate of unreported sexual crimes. While doing
research for the Occupation at Wounded Knee, I would like to learn what are some of the
factors that led to the American Indian being undervalued in society and what are some
things I can do today to make a difference.
o
Describe the beliefs, assumptions, and values you have related to the topic you chose.
After reading the brief history of the occupation of Wounded Knee from the Salem press
encyclopedia, I can connect this issue to my feelings about most organizations I have had
personal interaction with. Wounded Knee had systems in place to ensure the success of its
constituents. However, through corruption, greed, and an overall lack of compassion for what
was best for the masses, Wounded Knee was fraught with failure by the people in place to
create success.

o
Explain why this topic is relevant to current events or to modern society.
The Occupation at Wounded Knee is relevant today because while we think we are
creating beneficial policies or acting in a manner that resolves a solution, humans are liable
to repeat past actions. Had I felt this way before, I would have acted differently during my
deployment to Afghanistan. Many Soldiers stated their resentment for Muslims and Muslim
culture, and I was positioned to challenge their thinking and remained silent. Silence and
ignorance are two factors that lead to the disenfranchisement of others. I believe this is why
events like the Occupation at Wounded Knee are relevant in today’s society.
