HIS 100 Module Three Activity Template: Revising Questions
Identify the topic you chose to explore:
Wounded Knee Occupation
Identify a historical perspective that could be applied to your historical event.
Before the Occupation at Wounded Knee the Oglala Lakota were living under the rule of a tyrant.
Tribal Chairman Richard (Dick) Wilson who had no regard for the culture of his tribes’ people and
was even reported to have threaten cutting off the braid of other American Indians. The
residents of Pine Ridge were steeped in the traditional culture of their ancestors. During Owen
Luck’s (2006), visit the elders of the Lakota tribe can be seen to be very traditional. Bureau of
Indian Affairs (BIA) leader Richard Wilson’s lack of concern with American Indian affairs led to
the elders reaching for assistance.
Revise your research question based on evidence from your primary and secondary sources.
How do the events that occurred during the Wounded Knee Occupation affect the preservation
of American Indian culture today?
Did the BIA’s tyranny set the stage for the events that took place during the 71 day Occupation of
Wounded Knee?
Explain how historical perspective and evidence from sources influenced your finalized research
question.
Throughout the readings I did not encounter any other tribal locations who were being
oppressed by their cultural peer. There seems to be a huge sense of the elders wanting to
resolve matters themselves. Had it not been for BIA’s unfair treatment would the American
Indian Movement (AIM) have chosen to occupy pine ridge? AIM was seeking places and
opportunities to highlight the broken treaties and sovereignty accords broken by the American
government. However, would the choice to occupy and reclaim Wounded Knee been available
without the influence of the BIA’s destruction?
