1 Keith Final Project Milestone One: Topic Proposal and Research Question Charity Keith October 1, 2023 HIS 502-Historical Methods Professor Kline Southern New Hampshire University
2 Keith The Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s remains a pivotal moment in American history. 1 While the influence of leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X has received widespread recognition, the vital roles played by women, particularly African American women, have often gone overlooked. As such, this research proposal seeks to draw attention to the critical contributions made by African American women in the Civil Rights Movement. The Role of African American Women during the Civil Rights Movement is an essential topic to explore because it helps to give a more complete picture of this critical period in American history. African American women were actively involved in the movement and played critical roles in organizing and leading it. 2 Their contributions were instrumental in achieving many of the movement's critical successes, yet those of their male counterparts have often overshadowed their stories. 3 Specific research questions addressed in this project include: What actions did African American women take during the Civil Rights Movement? How did their contributions differ from those of men, and how did they work together? What challenges did African American women face in their efforts to advance the cause of civil rights, both within the movement and in broader American society? Tentative conclusions suggest that African American women played a vital role in the Civil Rights Movement, working tirelessly to advance the cause of racial justice and equality. They organized rallies, marches, and other events, often at significant personal risk. Moreover, they helped to mobilize local communities and provided critical support for the movement's leaders. 1 Morris, The origins of the civil rights movement , 11 2 Collier-Thomas, Bettye, and Vincent P. 3 Keith Primary and secondary sources will be used to conduct this research. Primary sources will include interviews with individuals involved in the movement and archival materials such as letters, diaries, and other documents. Secondary sources will include books, articles, and other materials about the Civil Rights Movement and related topics. These research methods were selected because they will help provide a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of African American women's role in the Civil Rights Movement.
