Module 2-2 Activity: Primary and Secondary Sources
Robert K Faller
There are many differences between Primary and Secondary sources. Primary sources are
original, first-hand, and direct records of events or evidence. Primary sources also provide raw
information and evidence. Secondary sources are summaries, opinions, and interpretations of
primary sources. Secondary also provide second-hand information and commentary from others
(WCC Library).
Consulting a variety of sources is important in historical research because it adds a depth
and richness to historical analysis, provides a balanced perspective, uncovers new information,
helps understand the context, and avoids bias. When evaluating sources, it is important to
consider credibility, relevance, arguments, context, and bias. Throughout history, the outcome of
a battle is usually reported by the winning army. Not taking into account that maybe the losing
army killed the leader of the winning army (WCC Library).
I have decided to use the following source as my primary source for this class:
Archive of the President of the Russian Federation. (1986, April 26).
Extraordinary
Session of the CC CPSU Politburo.
National Security Archive.
I have decided on my secondary source as:
Schmid, S. D. (2015).
Chernobyl: From Accident to Sarcophagus.
In
Producing Power:
The Pre-Chernobyl History of the Soviet Nuclear Industry (pp 127-160).
The MIT Prress.
There are currently 436 operable reactors, 62 reactors under construction, and 213 that
have been shut down The United States of America leads with nuclear power produced with
771.6 TWh The lowest production comes from Armenia with around 5 TWh Five of the top six
power plants under construction are in China with one being in Egypt. There have been many
minor and major accidents in the nuclear plant history but Chernobyl outranks them.
I believe this combination of sources would be the best choices for writing up my
homework for the rest of this class.
