Loden’s Wheel Factor
Quote/Information
Prevalent Factors
Sharanda Jones Case
1. Socioeconomic Status
A Suburban Community quoted that “one inmate whose punishment
was cut was described in 2012 as a “calamity waiting to happen.”
(Martyn, 2015)
2. Ethnicity
Too poor to afford a so-called “dope lawyer” for her jury trial.
(Martyn, 2015)
3. Race
Byrd wanted to write about the disparity between crack-cocaine and
powder-cocaine sentences and the disparate effect on African
Americans and Hispanics. (Horwitz, Kahn 2015)
4. Education
Brittany K. Byrd was in her second year of law school at Southern
Methodist University.
(Horwitz, Kahn 2015)
5.Belief System/Religion
The Prosecutor want Jones to roll over on a Dallas police officer, but

Additional Factors
Additional Resources
1. Historical Events
Oct 6, the Justice Department announced a separate historic initiative
to give early release to 6,000 prisoners, under reforms that have
retroactively made drug sentences shorter. (Horwitz, Kahn 2015)
2. Department/Division
The United State Attorney’s Northern District of Texas spokesman
Kathy Colvin has repeatedly declined to comment on Jones’ case.
(Horwitz, Kahn 2015)
3. Political Event
On March 31, Obama granted sentence communities to 22 prisoners.
(Horwitz, Kahn 2015)
Reflection:
After reading both articles, identifying the factors most prevalent in influencing interactions with the
criminal justice system was easy.
The reason why the factors were so easy to identify is because the articles spoke about how the justice
system (political) created laws that would allow certain racial groups to get higher sentences (race).
Dates were also stated to show
historical events
. Decisions were pointed out from different divisions in
the criminal justice system (Department/Division).
An opinion from upper class citizens were giving
regarding the early release of inmates (Socioeconomic Status).
The Jurist opinions of how they were not
advised of the penalty that would be placed on the defendant Jones, if she was found guilty, using the
words “my god” and Jones not wanting to give vital information on a friend displayed actions that fall
under
Belief System/Religion.
Lastly, the article spoke about the
education
Jones’ attorney Brittany Byrd
had which played a huge part in her case to reduce her sentence.
I believe it was difficult to find examples of a few factors because the author was being respectful and
the people involved did not want to show racism although, Mrs.
Bryd stated, that no one she
represented was part of the group released or received a sentence reduction.
These articles showed a
perfect display of value, beliefs, dimensions of identity for people and the United States government
which is what the Diversity Wheel represent.
