Assignment 5 - Rise of the Deep South: The Assignment for Module 5 includes two short-answer question. Each is worth 5 points. Base your answer on the information presented in the Rise of the Deep South Sway lesson (and the primary source included within the lesson). Do not use outside sources. Do not copy or share answers. Provide specific details/examples. 1) Answer the first question in 2 paragraphs: Many during the revolutionary era had assumed that slavery would die a natural death. It did not. Why did slavery end up expanding in the South? In other words, what allowed for the expansion of slavery? (Note: the video lecture is important for answering this question.) -The video explains the expansion of slavery in the South by associating it with the expansion of cotton production. After the revolutionary era Eli Whitney developed his Cotton Gin. This invention made production faster and easier. With the new method there was a higher supply of cotton but with that a higher number of slaves as well as they were the ones growing and supplying the cotton for the new invention. The video mentions that another reason for the expansion of slavery was the total expansion of the country. During the Louisiana purchase, the Mississippi River now became an easy route for trade, and in this case an easy route for the Cotton Trade. Along with the purchase, more land was now used for cotton plantation. Actions were also done within the South itself to prevent the dying down of slavery. At this time it was almost seen as okay and supported for men, many of them slave owners to rape female slaves in order for expansion to occur. Along with rape, many began kidnapping as well. . Be sure to use direct quotations from the source to support your answer (argument). Explain what the quotes show and how they connect to your argument.
None of the delegates to the Constitutional Convention in 1787 had claimed that slavery was a moral system. By the mid-19 th century, however, pro- slavery Southerners began to argue that slavery was morally correct. To answer the prompt below, read and analyze the primary source by George Fitzhugh. Prompt: How did Fitzhugh attempt to defend slavery? (In other words, what arguments did he present in his defense of slavery?) What had prompted him to write his defense of the South? How might his background have influenced his perspective? -Fitzhugh attempted to defend slavery by comparing the North and South. He presented reasons for enslavement as a beneficial practice. He made the North out to be run by dictator-like capitalists who had no concern for others, he thought it was preferable to live in the South than the North. "At the slaveholding South, all is peace, quiet, plenty, and contentment." The words he employs to describe it, support his claim that life is good in the South. Fitzhugh's desire to defend the South and explain why they received treatment better than the North inspired him to compose his defense of the South because he wanted to avoid the anti- slavery discussion. He also attempts to say that the North only cares about its financial status. George Fitzhugh practiced law which made him able to make his case more persuasively if he had prior legal experience. He might have been able to compose very persuasive and distinctive pieces because of his experience as a lawyer.
