Homework Assignment #4:
Explanation File
The Declaration of Independence and Contemporary Revolutions
In class we reviewed two passages from the Declaration of Independence that assert two competing
interpretations of revolution.
The first passage states, “Whenever any government becomes destructive of these ends [of rights], it
is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it ...”
This passage asserts that revolution is justified in some extreme circumstances. For example, when a
government abuses the rights of the people, or becomes tyrannical. It reflects the Social Contract. It
is a green light to revolution, in some circumstances.
The second passage states, “Prudence, indeed will dictate that governments long established should
not be changed for light and transient causes ...”
This passage is a word of caution. Revolutions are a last resort, for major causes only, not for minor
or temporary ones, since they lead to violence, death, and destruction.
This is a yellow light.
In the context of the two passages above in the Declaration of Independence, are the
following contemporary revolutions / civil wars / potential revolutions justified: yes, no,
