He was an American business magnate who
built his wealth in railroads and shipping. After
working with his father’s business, Vanderbilt
worked his way into leadership positions in the
inland water trade and invested in the rapidly
growing railroad industry.
Andrew Carnegie
American steel
industry
He was a Scottish-American industrialist and
philanthropist. He led the expansion of the
American steel industry and became one of the
richest Americans in history. He became a
leading philanthropist in the U.S. and in the
British Empire.
J. Pierpont Morgan
Financier and Wall
Street
He was an American financier and banker who
dominated corporate finance on Wall Street
through the Gilded Age.
John D. Rockefeller
Business and
Philanthropy
An American business magnate and
philanthropist. He is widely considered the
wealthiest American of all time and the richest
person in modern history. Rockefeller was born
into a large family in the upstate NY that moved
several times before settling in Cleveland, Ohio.

Gospel of Wealth
,” what obligations did the wealthy owe to
society? (p. 524)
Carnegie made it clear that he believed that those who were wealthy or had
accumulated a vast amount of money and wealth were obligated to give and return their
money back to others in society.

Consider the beliefs of so-called
Social Darwinists
. (p. 524-525)

Why did they believe some people were wealthy and powerful?
They believed in the concept of “survival of the fittest”, which was the idea that
certain people had become powerful in their society because they believed that
they were simply just better than the rest of society.
b.
Why did they believe other people were poor and weak?
They believed others were poor and weak because they believed that those who
did not have large sums of money were lazy and were poor workers, which is
why they are in poverty.
c.
What implications follow from these beliefs?
Social Darwinists tried to justify imperialism, racism, eugenic, and social
inequality for their own personal successes.
