Byzantine Empire 3.E I can identify the events that contributed to the advancement of Eastern Europe and the Middle East during the Middle Ages. The final step in the death of the Roman Empire is when their leader, Constantine, moves the capital from Rome to the Greek city of Byzantium. This move shifted the center of power from Rome to the east. Constantine changed the name of the city to Constantinople (the city of Constantine). Once the split finally occurs, the East will survive, the West would fall. Using your textbook, investigate the key events in the Byzantine Empire. 1. Read “A New Rome in a New Setting” (301). Describe how Justinian is able to conquer much of the former Western Roman Empire. 2. Read “Life in the New Rome” (302). Explain the Justinian Code. A) How might this impact life in the empire? B) Can you compare this to any other form of law from previous civilizations? 3. Read “Creating the Imperial Capital” (302-303). In what ways does Justinian improve the capital? A) What was considered his “crowning glory”? Explain why. B) Describe the cultural advancements that were made in the Byzantine Empire.
4. Read “The Church Divides” (304, 306). Explain some of the issues that contributed to a split in the Christian church. 5. Read “Analyzing Key Concepts” (305). What do you think was the most important issue dividing the two churches? Explain your answer. A) Do you think the schism (split) between the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church will ever be healed and the two churches reunited? Why or why not?
