You do note need to use complete sentences. 1. What was the purpose of the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC)? What industry did they investigate in the 1940s? The HUAC investigated alleged disloyalty and subversive activities on the part of private citizens, public employees, and those organizations suspected of having fascist or communist ties. They investigated Hollywood in the 1940s. 2. Who were the “Hollywood Ten”? What happened to “the 10” and those who supported them? The “Hollywood Ten” were 10 witnesses who were suspected of being part of the Communist Party. They were asked if they had been part of the Communist Party and were later imprisoned. The hundreds who followed them were blacklisted and were terrified. 3. What was Alger Hiss accused of by HUAC in 1948? Who made his career investigating Hiss? What was the verdict reached in the case? Alger Hiss was accused of passing secrets to the Soviet Union by a former communist. Richard Nixon made his career investigating Hiss. After an initial mistrial due to a hung jury, he was later found guilty and sentenced to prison. 4. What did Republican Senator Joe McCarthy blame the loss of China to communism on? What was supposedly on Joe McCarthy’s list? Republican Senator Joe McCarthy blamed the loss of China to communism on traitors in the state department. Eisenhower’s old wartime commander General Marshall was accused by McCarthy of treachery. Members of the Senate who were part of the Communist party and a spy ring were supposedly on his list. 5. Despite this, what happened to the leaders of the Communist Party in America? Leaders of the Communist Party in America were jailed, left-wing labor organizations were banned, demonstrations were broken up, and radical groups were indicted.
6. Who did Eisenhower choose as his running mate in 1952? Though Eisenhower enlisted the support of Joe McCarthy, in this election, how did he feel about McCarthy personally? Eisenhower chose Richard Nixon as his running mate in 1952. He hated McCarthy personally. 7. What happened to Ethel and Julius Rosenberg for helping the USSR get the Atomic bomb? Why wouldn’t the leading liberal judge at the time try to help them? For helping the USSR to get the Atomic Bomb, Ethel and Julius Rosenberg were sentenced to death. The leading liberal judge Jerome Frank at the time wouldn’t try to help them because he was scared himself and was frightened by the atmosphere in the country. He feared that if he saved their lives, he would be charged as a Commie. 8. How did McCarthy eventually lose support in his “red baiting”? Who did McCarthy begin accusations against “going to far”? McCarthy eventually lost support in his “red baiting” because he denounced leading republicans and even senior army officers as “Communist sympathizers”. There was a move to censor him as his support diminished and his opposition grew. He didn’t listen to what his advisors told him to do and his power collapsed as politicians walked away from him.
