Running head:Module Six Assignment 1 Module Six Assignment Southern New Hampshire University CJ-315-Q7650 Victimology 23EW2 Explain what empathy is and how it is applied in the CJ system: Demonstrating empathy holds significant value in the criminal justice system as CJ professionals, first
Module Six Assignment 2 responders, and individuals directly involved can contribute immensely to aiding victims in the recovery process. Empathy is defined as establishing a connection with an individual by taking the perspective of others, refraining from passing judgment, recognizing their emotions, and expressing a mutual level of feeling with them (RSA, 2013). Additionally, empathy can be applied in all areas of the criminal justice system, including incidents involving first responders, the courts, and even corrections. Moreover, how criminal justice professionals apply empathy varies depending on the situation. For example, a law enforcement officer may respond to a victim of domestic violence by separating the victim from the offender, utilizing any crisis communication techniques, and comforting the victim by safeguarding them. On the other hand, should a law enforcement officer encounter an autistic victim who is experiencing a crisis while unconscionably holding a weapon, this would require the officer to refrain from expressing any form of verbal or nonverbal aggression or escalation of force. Describe how empathy influences interactions between a victim of robbery and CJ professionals: Empathy can influence interactions between a victim of robbery and criminal justice professionals in many ways, such as how these professionals establish a shared understanding with the victim regarding their experience, or how they recognize the emotions of the victim and develop the appropriate response. However, first responders, such as law enforcement, are usually the initial individuals to arrive at the scene; therefore, law enforcement's role is of the utmost importance as their actions or inactions can build or break trust with the victim (Takahashi & James, 2018). Therefore, criminal justice professionals such as law enforcement typically display empathy for a victim of robbery as they are the first responders on the scene. Lastly, empathy affects the interactions between CJ professionals, such
Module Six Assignment 3 as law enforcement, and a victim of robbery as expressing empathy allows for building rapport with the victim and opening up the possibility of victim rehabilitation. Describe the responses to a victim of robbery by criminal justice professionals: Criminal justice professionals' response to a victim of robbery would typically involve actively listening to the victim by understanding what has been taken from them, understanding the impact on the victim, and formulating a response aimed at assisting the victim in minimizing additional harm resulting from the crime. Inappropriate responses to a victim of robbery would be lacking empathy, lacking the ability to understand the victim, failing to understand the impact of the crime on the victim, and failing to provide victim resources to the individual affected by the crime. As a result, failing to develop the appropriate responses to a victim of robbery can negatively affect the victim by creating a loss of trust or invoking additional trauma, while developing an appropriate response can build trust and enhance cooperation with the victim in aiding them in the recovery process, respectively.
