HIS 100 Module Five Activity Template: Historical Interpretations
Replace the bracketed text below with your responses.
Identify the topic you chose to explore:
Iranian Revolution
Describe how exploring your research question improved your understanding of the historical roots of
your current event.
Before I started exploring the Iranian Revolution, I had only a base understanding of the event.
As I started to research, what I had originally thought was not the most accurate version of
events. I have gained an understanding as to why women may have supported the Revolution.
For example, they were under the impression that women would have more rights and have
more of an equal say in politics and everyday life. Unfortunately, no one questioned what
women’s role would be. “But in the excitement of that revolution, nobody paid much attention
to what Ayatollah Khomeini was saying in Paris. He said women will have a role in the society but
within an Islamic framework. Nobody bothered in those days to ask, "What is the Islamic
framework?"’(Seay, 1997).
Explain how biased perspectives influence what is known about both your historical and current events.
When it comes to biased perspectives on the Iranian Revolution, it can be looked at through the
eyes of the face of the revolution, Ayatollah Khomeini. He was very biased in his way of thinking
and what was right for Iran. He held strong beliefs in what he believed to be right for the country
and the set of laws that were to be followed.
Propose how the narrative about your historical event might change if it were told from a missing
perspective.
The women’s liberation movement before, during, and after the Iranian Revolution could be
seen differently through the eyes of women that did not support it. When the veil was
abolished, some women did not leave their house because they felt naked without their veil.
Essentially, their right to choose was taken away. Also, how their nonsupport influenced the
Iranian Revolution. How did they view the revolution? Did they think it would benefit them?
How did they view the women’s movement that was happening in Iran?
Propose how the narrative about your current event might change if it were told from a missing
perspective.
Women are a missing narrative altogether when it comes to the Iranian Revolution. If they held
the narrative, we might get an understanding as to why Ayatollah Khomeini was able to win the
revolution. Also, why the Shah just left Iran and did not put up a bigger fight for their country
and the women that they granted rights to.
