Module 11 Check for Understanding 1. How had the Church become institutionalized in Europe by 1000 CE? The church was able to become institutionalized in Europe through the use of Monasteries. With the label “the biggest landowner”, it would not be a surprise how the Church was able to quickly take over. 2. What were two ways the Byzantine Empire was a continuation of the Roman Empire? The Byzantine Empire was a continuation of the Roman Empire in culture and system of government. As stated in the lecture, “The emperors continued to call themselves Roman emperors…”, even though they needed to retake control from the barbarians. Next, a Byzantine emperor by the name of Justinian came up with the Code of Justinian. As stated in the lecture, “one uniform code of law based on Roman laws”, therefore it makes sense as to why Justinian (heavily Roman influenced) shaped his newfound government based on Roman values. 3. What was the reason for the Sunni-Shia split in Islam? According to the text, the reason why the Sunni-Shia split occurred is due to the death of Muhammed and the uncertainty of who the next caliph would/should be. Ultimately, during the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE, the Sunni had become victorious. 4. What were two ways the Abbasid dynasty differed from the Umayyad dynasty? The Abbasid Dynasty was different from the Umayyad Dynasty because while the Umayyad “kept their local officials in place” the Abbasid Dynasty adopted a Persian prime minister governing system. Another reason why they differed is that the Abbasid dynasty wanted to succeed in being able to govern everyone accordingly and therefore the willingness to get an outside perspective and mold it to their liking.
