HIS 100 Module Five Activity Template: Historical Interpretations Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Identify the topic you chose to explore: Topic: Inequality and Human Rights Subtopic: Tulsa Massacre Describe how exploring your research question improved your understanding of the historical roots of your current event. My research question, what societal influences triggered the Tulsa Massacre, has provided me with a better understanding of the external influences that were ongoing during this particular era. My research started with a sole focus on racism and the underlying jealousy that the citizens of Tulsa had towards the residents of Greenwood. There was a lack of integration between the two cultures that caused a clash that led to devastation on both sides, not just Greenwood. Though Greenwood did take the worst part of the damage and casualties during the event. Regarding my current event, there are so many to choose from. Though no recent event has measured to the level of tragedy that this one did, there are several events I can think of that show racism is still alive and influencing the murder of African Americans including the attack in East Buffalo on May 14 th , 2022. A white supremacist took the lives of 10 African Americans and injured 3 others. The shooter plead guilty to 15 criminal charges, including a first degree domestic terrorism charge that comes with a mandatory sentence of life in prison (Franklin J., 2023). Similar shootings and acts of aggression towards African Americans are becoming more frequent and quite alarming. Explain how biased perspectives influence what is known about both your historical and current events. The biggest bias is the reasoning someone would use to justify the “why” behind these events. While these were racially driven events, the Tulsa Massacre could have been avoided by the police handling the situation better, the media being honest instead of malicious, and the citizens of Tulsa being more open to welcoming other cultures. Unfortunately, racism is a trait that is taught at home and it bleeds to others as time goes on. As for my current event, the shooting in Buffalo could have been avoided by imposing stricter gun laws, though we all know criminals will find a way to obtain firearms legally or not. There is little mentioned in the information I found on the shooters background, so I am unable to say for certain that mental health intervention may have aided in the prevention of this event, nor if this shooter had any past criminal history that could have even foreshadowed this tragic event. It honestly just leaves me with so many more questions than answers. Propose how the narrative about your historical event might change if it were told from a missing perspective. The Tulsa Massacre or “race riots” could be altered if told from the perspective of the Tulsa citizens that were involved in the incident as deputies or the aggressors of the violence. It could mention the thoughts or mindsets of the individuals who started the massacre.
Propose how the narrative about your current event might change if it were told from a missing perspective. The reason behind the shooting in East Buffalo could have shifted to gun violence and laws if viewed in a political perspective. Though the overall reason for the shooting was white supremacy and a hate crime, there could be reason behind the entire situation being avoided with stricter gun laws. Franklin, J., & Hernandez, J.
