HIS 200 Writing Plan Progress Check 3
In Module Three: Communicating Historical Ideas, Learning Block 3-4 (page 2) in the web text
, you completed the following element:
I.
Describe the historical event that you selected. Why is this event significant?
After completing checkpoint 1-2, I am interested in learning more about President Abraham Lincoln and his assassination and what exactly occurred and why it occurred. Doing further research into this topic, I have found that Abraham Lincoln’s assassination dramatically changed the reconstruction era. President Abraham Lincoln was known as America’s Civil War leader and was assassinated just five days after Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered his army. Which ended up ending the four-year war between the states. How does John Wilkes Booth come into play? Was he hired to do this to the president or was he more involved?
II.
Describe at least two secondary sources that you could use to research your historical event. Your sources must be relevant to your event and must be of an appropriate academic nature. In your description, consider questions such as: What
are the similarities and differences in the content of your sources? What makes them appropriate and relevant for investigating your event? What was your thought
process when you were searching for sources? How did you make choices?
In the secondary resource below, the helps describe the reconstruction after Lincoln’s assassination and what likely made the reconstruction more difficult than it would have been under his leadership. Lincoln was assassinated on April 14
th
, 1865, and he always pushed for leniency and moderation in reconstruction. It also goes over how he was against the Republican plan and saw it as too extreme. Those are just a few details described in this article. Columbia Law Review. Mar2018, Vol 118 Issue 2, p323-489. 167p.
In the secondary resource below, this goes over the life of John Wilkes Booth and the life
he came from before his decision to assassinate the President of the US. He tells us about his back story and what he did for his career and the relationships he made that led him to Lincolns booth that night. John Booth. [electronic resource]: Assassin in the Spotlight. (2011). Films Media Group.
III.Describe at least two primary sources that you could use to research your historical event. Your sources must be relevant to your event and must be of an appropriate academic nature. In your description, consider questions such as: How do these sources relate to your secondary sources? What do they add to your understanding of the event? What makes them appropriate and relevant for investigating your event?
With the primary source below, this has first-hand accounts of letters that were written directly to
and about Lincoln during his run as the President and first-hand accounts of different individuals that had different experiences with Abraham Lincoln right before his assassination. William H Herndon, Douglas L. Wilson, Rodney O. Davis. Herndon on Lincoln: Letters. University of Illinois Press; 2016.
The last primary resource I would use for the project is a passage from a dear friend that was close to Abraham Lincoln that goes by the name of Horatio Nelson Taft. He wrote a message in his Diary about his dear friend that had gotten assassinated, and it goes over the details of what happened and his account of what he can recall. For a primary resource, I think this source is one
I can get useful information from to help further my knowledge on this topic.
In Module Three: Communicating Historical Ideas, Learning Block 3-4 (page 3) in the web
text, you worked toward the following element:
IV.Based on your review of primary and secondary sources, develop a research question related to the historical event you selected. In other words, what would you
like to know more about?
Was the reason Abraham Lincoln got assassinated because his plan for reconstruction was too lenient towards the South for starting the war?
V.
Create a thesis statement based on your research question. Your thesis should be clear, specific, and arguable, and state a claim about your historical event. As you create your thesis, keep in mind an audience that would be interested in your historical event and research question.
Was Abraham Lincolns plan too lenient and did his decision to not hold a stronger stance on how
to punish the South initially lead to President Lincolns demise?
