What role do historical events, changing geopolitics, and the rise of the Hamas Party contribute to the complex nature and growth of the Gaza-Israel conflict? https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/11/27/palestine-and-israel-brief-history-maps-and-charts The demographics of Palestine before the British Mandate are shown in this 1917 map, featuring a particular focus on the Jewish and Palestinian populations. I chose it to graphically represent the situations surrounding the Balfour Declaration for my project, highlighting the difference between the declaration's promise of a national home for the Jewish people and the majority Palestinian population. This connects with my research question regarding the role of historical events in the Gaza-Israel conflict, specifically highlighting the impact of the Balfour Declaration on the complex nature of the conflict.
https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/11/27/palestine-and-israel-brief-history-maps-and-charts The graph I chose shows how the Jewish population in Palestine increased drastically from 6% to 33% between 1918 and 1947. Causes like Jewish migration fleeing events in Europe and coordinated attempts to campaign for a Jewish homeland in Palestine led to this demographic change. For my project, I chose this graph because it highlights an important cause that ultimately led to the future Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It also connects with my research on the Balfour Declaration, showing a connection between population changes, historical events, and the complex nature of the Israel-Gaza conflict.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/11/27/palestine-and-israel-brief-history-maps-and-charts The infographic shows the 1947 UN Partition Plan for Palestine, an important historical attempt to resolve the Arab-Jewish conflict by putting forth a two-state solution. For my final project, I chose to use this to help illustrate the significance of the UN Partition Plan, which was rejected by Arab governments and has been credited for starting the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. The UN plan came into being in response to rising violence associated with demographic changes caused by Jewish immigration, as the infographic illustrates in relation to my research question and the graph showing Jewish immigration to Palestine. The relationship between Zionist ideals and the UN Partition Plan is also highlighted, showing the complex interaction of historical events that shaped the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The chosen map shows how Jerusalem is currently divided, highlighting the sharp difference between the largely Jewish West Jerusalem and the primarily Palestinian East Jerusalem that Israel captured during the 1967 Six-Day War. Because of the ongoing tension and bloodshed caused by the city's claimed status as the capital of both Israel and Palestine, this division will serve as an important part of my final project on the Israel-Gaza conflict. The map is perfect representation of my research question and the UN Partition Plan graphics, highlighting the unresolved nature of this crucial problem in the conflict and exposing the Plan's ignored aim for an internationalized Jerusalem. Furthermore, by including the Old City, a sacred location for Christians, Muslims, and Jews, the map highlights the religious aspects and the complex interaction between political and religious factors in the ongoing battle for Jerusalem.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/11/27/palestine-and-israel-brief-history-maps-and-charts The 1948 Arab-Israeli War had a major impact, as shown by the Nakba map, which shows the sites of refugee camps, demographic changes, and the relocation of Palestinians and their loss of land. The reason I chose this map for the final project is that it effectively illustrates the core causes of the Israel-Gaza conflict by highlighting the recurrent issues of displacement and dispossession at the heart of the conflict. The map offers an accurate representation of the outcome of the UN Partition Plan, connecting with the research question in an efficient way. The Nakba map shows the ongoing tensions that emerged from the planned partition, while the UN split Plan sought to create a geopolitical division.
