Asking the Right Questions
Directions:
For this activity, you will be the regional security manager of a 24-hour convenience store chain (e.g., 7-Eleven). You will create a list of 10 questions you would ask to evaluate the effectiveness of your security program at a high-revenue-grossing store. You will also justify why each question is important. Use the template provided below.
Question
Justification
1.
Are the CCTV cameras functional and are they up to date with the current software updates?
The CCTV cameras function as a good deterrent for criminals when the cameras are in places that can be seen by the naked eye as well as the camera having a good view of the entire store.
2. Are the lights outside the establishment working properly and how bright were the wattage?
If there is poor lighting it can lead to an increase in criminal activity and lead to the store being robbed. the robber can park their vehicle in a place that is not lit properly to avoid identification. The bright lights will help to prevent criminals from taking advantage of the business.
3. Is the store in an orderly fashion and professional manner?
If the business has proper maintenance and the store is cleaned properly it helps to prevent injury as well as preventing shoplifters from putting things in their pockets or
in other places that they do not belong. The shoplifters will be easier for the employees to spot and allow the employees the opportunity to take care of the shoplifter in a proper manner without them getting outside of the store.
4. When a customer walks into the business are employees and other customers alerted?
Allows for the watching of foot traffic who enters and leaves the store and whether they look shady or are acting in suspicious manners.
5. Do the store's doors and windows have a mechanism to prevent vandalization and burglaries when the establishment is closed?
If the store participates in a robbery situation and the robber leaves, is there a lock on the door to keep the robber out so that they cannot return to the business? This allows
for the people inside the store to be able to stay safe.
6. Is the glass of the business bulletproof?
Is there bulletproof glass in the store to help protect the workers from any harm including but not limited to gunshots or stabbings?
7. Are the safe up to date with the safety protocols of the store?
Are the employees trained on how to behave during an emergency such as that of a robbery?
8. What are the procedures that the employees must take if a robbery were to occur?
Are the proper procedures put in place and does everyone know these procedures in the instance that a robbery occurs and everyone in the situation stays safe and does
not end up hurt?
9. Is there a silent alarm in a place where the employees could reach it without alerting the robbery suspect?
If the employees are faced with a robbery is there a button for them to press that will alert the police without the robber knowing that the police are alerted to make sure that everyone in the situation stays safe and that the police can arrive soon after the robber leaves to not create a hostage situation.
10. What is the training that the store manager uses to train their subordinates?
If the managers have the proper training it can help to build trust and confidence among their subordinates, that way if a crime occurs everyone knows what their role is to help get the situation under control. "Train with clearly defined and articulated procedures and insist that every shift employee follows identical procedures" (McGoey, 2023).
