Bryanna Olson HIS 200: Applied History Southern New Hampshire University November 12, 2023 Preliminary Writing Plan For my historical event analysis, I have chosen to focus on the supreme court case of Roe v Wade and its effects on society. this case was historically significant as it made abortion legal in all fifty states and therefore saved the lives and health of millions of women across the decades. While doing my research surrounding the history of this case and its significance, I will also be answering the question: How did the Roe v Wad e change the future for women as a whole? This question is important to answer because it allows us to look back and see how the case has altered history and how women’s health has changed over the years because of it. Search terms that I have used in my research so far as well as ones I plan to use in the future are “Roe v Wade”, “Roe v Wade transcript”, “Roe v Wade effects on society”, and “Roe v Wade impact on women's rights”. With these search terms, I was able to find and will be using the original court transcript on the Supreme Court website. I will be referencing this transcript to talk about the case itself and why it was so important. I also found and will be using the secondary source of ROE V. WADE: ITS HISTORY AND IMPACT from the Planned Parenthood website. With these sources as a starting point, I firmly believe I will be able to find enough information to answer my research questions, as well as every other question that will come up during my research.
Sources One primary source I plan to use for my research paper is the transcript of the Roe v Wade case, directly from the Supreme Court’s archive (https://www.supremecourt.gov/pdfs/transcripts/1972/70- 18_10-11-1972.pdf ). This is a primary source because it is the transcript of the original court case. One secondary source I plan to use for my paper is the Planned Parenthood document on Roe v Wade and it’s impact on women’s reproductive health in the time since its ruling (https://www.plannedparenthood.org/files/3013/9611/5870/Abortion_Roe_History.pdf). This source is a secondary source because it speaks of the history and wasn’t written at the time of the event happening; it is a secondhand account of the case. Thesis Statement Based on my research to date, I will try to support the following thesis: The Supreme Court case of Roe v Wade has had immense impact on the history of women’s health. This case has changed the way women’s reproductive rights have been looked at for decades and was one of the turning points in history when it came to women’s rights as a whole. This statement could change, based on subsequent research.
