1. What is the thesis of the selected chapter (article)?
2. What evidence does the author use to support his/her thesis?
3. Why is this topic significant to Texas history?
This chapter’s thesis asserts that Tejanos faced a continuous state of war, requiring them to choose
between Mexico and independence. This perpetual conflict thrust them into active roles, navigating
complex allegiances with various armies. The choice to pick a side had profound implications for
Texas’s future. This thesis prompts a closer look at the intricate dynamics and challenging
decisions that shaped the experiences of the Tejanos during this turbulent period of Texas history.
The author strengthens the thesis by highlighting Tejanos’ and residents’ heroics, highlighting their
active support for the Texas army. Examples of Tejanos going above and beyond the call of duty in
perilous situations demonstrate their crucial role beyond mere allegiance. These individuals risked
their safety and provided vital aid that shaped the war. The author emphasizes that without local
support, the war’s outcome would have been vastly different. One good example is how Antonio Cruz of Bexar company was honored by Travis for his
distinguished service. Without the help of the Tejanos Texas would look vastly different than what it does today. The
actions of the local people supporting the Texas army are no doubt the contributing factor that
helped the Texas army win multiple battles.
